1957 Chevrolet 150 2-Door Sedan

1957 Chevrolet 150 2 Door Sedan

Without question, the 1957 Chevy is one of America's most iconic images. From being instantly recognized around the world to its top ranking among diehard fans of GM's bowtie and general car enthusiasts alike, this single model year has seen it all since introduction. Its competition credentials were felt not only on the quarter-mile, but also on the ovals–both dirt. The '57 Chevy has also been replicated countless times in die-cast and molded plastic guises, ranging from 1/87 scale right up to 1/12th–even fiberglass go-kart bodies have been produced in its image. And its picture has hung on countless bedroom and garage walls.

For consignment, a 1957 Chevrolet 2 door sedan in 150 trim. With only a total of 2,762 models shy of the production of the Bel-Air, there were plenty of economy minded folks out there buying the 150 and the 210, but you would never know it. For 1957 a mere 8,000 plus models were produced snapped up by the traveling salesman due to the cargo space in the back, and still go in style. Subtle differences exist between this model and the upper models but this car is no slouch and worth every penny as to its low production numbers and “economy” styling.

Exterior
At the front of this five-seven, a monochromatic grille hangs a bright Chevrolet crest and polished parking lamps between chrome-trimmed headlights and a broad bumper. At the top of that grille, a domed hood centers polished spear bullet spoons in front of tinted glass that's draped in polished frames. This is all steel straight with well minded gaps, and is bathed in a color change of red. At the base of those frames, polished wipers, a factory driver's mirror and traditional door handles complement flashy trim spears and elegant “Chevrolet” scripts. A wrap around windshield is on, and this begins the transition to the light tan top, highlighting the red. And at the back of the car, a second broad bumper frames factory tail lights and a chrome trimmed V. Edge trimmings form a Z on the tail fins as they ground themselves on the bumper. Smaller flame shaped tail lights reside on the bottoms of these Z's and a backup light is within the bumper just below. Simple tan steel wheels with a trim ring and chromed moon cap covering the hub are wrapped in blackwall rubber on all 4 corners.

Interior
Featuring a stunning array of red and tan accents, this Chevy's carefully restored interior is both clean and impressive. At the center of the cockpit, firm bench seats wear a retro amalgamation of vinyl with tan tuck and roll inserts and strategically placed red bolsters on the seats and backs. The seats have an extension on them to accommodate a “larger” frame driver. In front of those seats, a full metal jacket dash forms round wide bezels bathed in all tan paint and house round black faced gauges and a lineup of small round lights in deep chromed bezels just above these gauges. These circles border on a square weave pattern chromed strip that runs the length of the dash, and houses some knobs and pulls, the radio which is now an AM/FM/Cassette version, and a rectangular clock in front of the passenger. Fronting the dash on the driver's side is a leather covered tilt column rally steering wheel. Just below the chromed square weave strip is another horizontal band which is back to the tan paint. Here temp buttons and a glovebox are seen. Just below the dash is a trio of aftermarket gauges to keep an eye on the vitals of the mill in front. Black carpeting floods the floors, and within the center upfront a B&M shifter box resides. Above is a nice tight blazing red headliner and it is filled with wow factor.

Drivetrain
The original “blue flame” inline 6 cylinder has been replaced with a large 350ci V8. Headers now grace this engine, and it is topped with 4 barrel Holley carburetor bolted to an Edelbrock intake manifold. A 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission pushes power rearward to a 3.36 axle. Ribbed valve coverings and polished bolt ons with some chromed accenting shows well inside this fully restored black painted engine bay.

Undercarriage
Very light surface rust is seen underneath, but all is fully structurally sound underneath. Floor pans and body hangers are painted black and have no surface rust. Rear shock supports are original with no rust. Independent coil overs are in front with tubular lower front control arms and leaf springs are now on and looking good. Power disc braking is on front, and power drums for the back. Noted are dual Turbo mufflers.

Drive-Ability
The car started easily, and was fun to drive. It had nice acceleration, and had a few rattles here and there. I was amazed at the quality of restoration on the interior, and all functions save for the radio were fully operational.

Maybe the “economy end” of the lineup, but this car is still a stunner, well done on the restoration, beautiful paint, and interior and a great driver. I think I'll get into traveling sales, do they still do that??!
