1941 Plymouth Deluxe Sedan

1941 Plymouth Deluxe Sedan

Due to the obvious connection, the Plymouth company made use of the Mayflower logo.  This took on several iterations throughout its lifespan, first appearing on the company logo, then eventually making its way to the hood ornament. This took on the styles of each era, with an Art Deco version, a 40's version with 4 full sails and a locomotive like hunk of chrome, a lighter flamboyant windswept take, a jet age version with the stylized sails within a jet like winged shape, a very sleek version nearly modern art looking more like a barracuda, and just before its demise in 2001, a graphic printed version of the square rigged cargo ship.

For consignment, a 1941 Plymouth Deluxe which is in mostly original state save for a newer interior. Owned by a collector, it shows in typical early 40's styling with rounded exterior mounted fenders, running boards and a split front windscreen. Harken back to a simpler time, and era where motoring was in its infancy and people were expanding their reaches, which led to the birth of a whole new genre that of the travel industry.

Exterior
Rust free steel panels bathed in patina black makes up this stylish rounded 2 door sedan.  Plenty of chrome for the curved concave grille with rounded edges.  A central curved V originates at the bumper and runs along the hood and then the entire car as a trim spear in chrome.  A single headlight is attached to the front of each fender and sports a chrome bezel with a turn signal atop.  Smaller running lights are below floating above the large shiny bumper.  Rounded exterior mounted fenders frame black steel wheels with chromes trim rings and a moon cap center hub cap with a snappy red badge of the mayflower and PLYMOUTH just below. These wheels are all wrapped in wide white bias ply tires. A rounded passenger compartment roofline shows the makings of an early torpedo style, and uses an oval rear glass to enhance that effect.  Rear fenders melt into the curved down trunk deck with vertical rectangular tail lights and another small signal light just below.  The trunk latch is a large chromed handle with a center round running light and the shiny large bumper below has a center vertical post all gleaming.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see a gray modern version of mohair fabric with original cranks and levers, bakelite knobs and chromed levers and bezels.  Slipping inside I can feel the newness of these broadcloth covered seats, with light gray inserts and darker gray bolsters.  The  front split back bench and rear solid bench are in upholstered tubs, and float in yellowed gray and faded original carpeting. A pristine white bakelite steering fronts a rectangular gold instrument cluster which uses rectangular gauge inserts.  Bakelite knobs and pulls are seen in a lineup below the instrumentation.  A central black painted full metal jacket dash front with a Plymouth badge is noted and on the passenger's side is a glovebox and just below a heater box. Very light gray broadcloth is making up the tight and pristine tufted headliner.

Drivetrain
Under the bulbous hood, is a 201.3ci L headed inline 6 cylinder engine.  It is fed by a 1 barrel carburetor and has the original 3 speed manual transmission on back as well as the 4.11 rear axle.  Some patina is showing on the sides of the engine bay, and a surface rusted head is noted, as is new wiring and hoses.

Undercarriage
Up on the lift we note a solid black painted X frame with black rust painted floor pans.  Rockers have some surface rust but remain solid.  Inner fenders just have patina paint and road dirt.  Surface rust is noted in independent coil sprung front suspension and rear leaf springs.  Also its got drum braking on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
A quick startup and off to the test track where it exhibited smooth acceleration, and easy steering when moving.  The brake pedal is a bit soft, and the brakes drag after being pushed.  Turn signals would not flash, and the left rear lights have gone dark.  Also the horn is weak.  The interior is comfy and ergonomics are good.

A car with older patinaed black paint, which is very rare and in this case a collector realized the value of this.  Appearance may suffer a bit, however it is nearly original!  A new interior, and mechanically sound engine are what this rounded road ship is all about.
