2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG

2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG

Most people associate Mercedes-Benz vehicles with AMG, but at one time AMG was an aftermarket tuner company that modified Mercedes.  AMG is now the performance division of Mercedes-Benz.  AMG Mercedes-Benz automobiles are tuned in a specific way and upgraded for additional power.  These vehicles also provide extra-sporty handling and more stylish aesthetics.  The AMG engineering team invests the time and effort necessary to hand build each engine.  These engines make the vehicles that much more exclusive and consequently, more coveted by automobile enthusiasts around the world.  All of these qualities add up to distinguish AMG vehicles from so-called “normal” vehicles.

From Autobahn to Morgantahn, (sic/“Dutchey”), and within the massive confines of the Classic Auto Mall is this 2002 version of the SLK-AMG Mercedes Benz sports car.  A 3.2 Liter supercharged V6, 5-speed Speedshift transmission, a retractable hardtop, and some spiced up AMG suspension and wheels, we are now feasting our eyes at the top of the automotive food chain.

Exterior
Bathed in black with a black fiberglass retractable hardtop, we have a sports car meets open cockpit roadster.  With its ultra sleek bulbous flirting with aerodynamic lines, and all integrated headlamps, tail lamps, bumpers and grille, the air around you will never see you coming.  Especially thrilling is the Formula One front center grille nose complete with tri-pointed star paying homage to the racing heritage that helped in its design and performance. This car has been well cared for but showing some age and the miles with a few dings, chips and cracks in the neoprene on the exterior surfaces.  We see fog lights and Depot projector headlights on front and smoked Depot tail lights back, and when on at night, this car comes up on you and is menacing, so just get out of its way and it will be ahead in no time.  With the touch of a button the hardtop disappears into the rear of the body and this choreographed dance happens flawlessly thanks to rebuilt top cylinders.  17-inch AMG multi-spoke black center alloy wheels wrapped in nearly new Riken “gummies” this car handles like it's on rails.

Interior
With mostly black leather, a racing inspired design comes to form on the inside.  A console mounted shifter with the "Speed Shift" manual mode available, telescoping and tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power windows, and dual integrated roll bars, are among just the plethora of options added on for performance and convenience.  Sexy round deep-set analog gauges are bordered by an electronic odometer which is showing 150,972 original miles.  A Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo graces the center of the dash and hovers above a slew of rocker switches for the seat heaters and tow mode as well as other functions all surrounded by a nice burl inlay.  Black carpet with lightly soiled AMG floormats floats the interior with the driver's bucket seat presenting with color loss and age wear on the upper left bolster and a tear in the front of the lower left bolster.  All indicative of the miles.

Drivetrain
3.2 Liters of SOHC V6 is electronically fuel injected and supercharged to give you a total of 349 horses at your right foot.  2000 miles ago a B-service was completed, the engine oil and supercharger oil were changed and a K&N air filter was installed as well as new valve cover gaskets being installed approximately 1000 miles ago.  It has a 5-speed Speedshift automatic on back which recently has had the fluid and filter changed.  A 3.27 geared rear axle puts the power to the asphalt.

Undercarriage
No rust, straight, structurally sound steel and plenty of ground effects panels are noted.  A full AMG sports suspension is on and an AMG high performance extra-large braking system has been added as part of the total AMG package.  Our consignor notes that new front lower ball joints have recently been installed.  Last but not least a speed sensitive power assisted rack and pinion steering with a new steering damper which allows you to feel the road at numerous levels of speed.  A Remus dual stainless steel exhaust system is on for the exhale and is looking fab.

Drive-Ability
High quality, high performance is to be expected and it was delivered on my test drive of this little German marvel of AMG special treatment.  Great acceleration, speed sensitive handling, and steering, and plenty of oversized brake stopping power.  Best of all this car can cruise comfortably all day and not even break a sweat.  The fiberglass retractable hardtop makes this car very drivable in any weather conditions.  Nice driver.

AMG are three letters you want after the SLK badge, as this increases the cars potential exponentially.  Beautiful timeless design, bulbous small maneuverable German sports car lines and ultra inner adjustability to suit any frame of person, this is a very nice car.  You'll quickly realize when looking at this car there are no more links in the chain to climb because you are at the very top!
