1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible

1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible

The Oldsmobile Cutlass is a line of automobiles produced by Oldsmobile between 1961 and 1988, and again briefly in 1997-1999. Over time the Cutlass name accumulated great brand equity, becoming not only Oldsmobile's best-selling model but one of the most popular nameplates in the industry in the 1970s. By the 1980s, Oldsmobile was using the Cutlass as a sub-marque, with numerous vehicle lines bearing the name simultaneously. These included the Cutlass Calais compact, the midsize Cutlass Ciera, the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and top of the line midsize Cutlass Supreme.

For consignment, probably the one of the best years prior to the next generation changeover. This sleek sporty and nicely designed version has undergone some refreshing on the exterior but still needs some interior TLC to bring this drop top up to snuff. We give you a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme in convertible form, a drivable project which brings some class to our extensive rooms and halls of the Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
Repainted in the past in the original hue of Nordic Blue, attention to detail was paid on this car but is now showing some age. Paint is at the deep end of the pool but does present with some inclusions and bubbling forming at the bottom rear of the passenger's door. A perfectly aligned but aged split grille and dual headlights with a shiny but twisted bumper below, which continues the grille opening and houses round signal/running lights is below. Shiny trimmings show up all over this car and work to accentuate the forward moving coke bottle form of this car. These include wheel well trim, rocker trim and window trimmings and are all looking great. Up top is a nearly new white canvas convertible top with a glass rear window that is power actuated. Steel panels are very straight and have well minded gaps. Bringing up the rear is a beautiful V formed rear bumper with a series of 2 horizontal rectangle inset tail lights on each side. Like new Dunlop Qualifier GT raised white letter tires wrap 14 inch Oldsmobile Super Stock 2 wheels which have deep dish rings and body matching centers. “And now we see not just another pretty car.”

Interior
Opening the large well balanced doors we shake hands with blue steel door frames sans panels. We note the presence of manual windows, but fret not, as in the parts filled trunk we see a pair of new white panels with fresh wood applique waiting to be installed. Slipping inside we get behind the original wheel which shows as cracked, discolored and a bit sticky. This wheel fronts the original cluster and dash which presents to us in blue and is loaded with plenty of wood appliqué for the gauge cluster. We note the glovebox in front of the passenger has been removed and an empty hole where the radio once did reside. Fronting this dash is a wonderfully clean split back bench front seat which is tuck and roll white vinyl and has a central fold up and down armrest. More parts reside where the rear seat cushions once were set and we note the absence of rear side panels. “Nothing to watch but the road..”

Drivetrain
A pop of the hood which has new insulation on the underside and you will be in 350ci Rocket Engine gold painted heaven! There is a 2-barrel factory carb atop and all parts present with a healthy dusting and patina. Bolted to the back of the mill is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and lest we forget it has a 10-bolt rear. “The power of intelligent engineering.”

Undercarriage
Up in the air we can breathe in the unrestored frame and flooring. This presents in a mix of patina, surface rust and black factory undercoating all the while remaining intact and structurally solid. Single exhaust is on for the exhale and the car rides on independent coil sprung front suspension, and a 4 link with coil springs in back. Bringing this cruiser to a stop are power front disc brakes and power rear drums.

Drive-Ability
Incomplete interior aside, it performs well and this car was a pleasure to drive and experience. With a twist of the key the engine settled into a low key idle and I gently pushed the accelerator to the floor and took off with rocket-like acceleration. Smooth shifting, bias free panic stopping and a comfy cruise without even breaking a sweat. While not quite a looker on the inside, the blue exterior drew many thumbs up and smiles from our faithful onlookers. Of note, during our drive we found the wipers and horn to both be non-functional. “In man's search for a new measure of excellence…”

What more can I say, other than just a beautiful example from 1971. Beautiful early 70's styling with the majority of the hard work done, and from a glance it appears the majority of the interior pieces are included. A great classic piece of Detroit iron in our Hallowed Halls that remains largely unmolested, and with a great potential. Hurry in, this Rocket is sure not to last.
