1967 Ford Fairlane GTA

1967 Ford Fairlane GTA

The Ford Fairlane is a unibody. The difference is in trim. XL500 being the "fanciest", GT, (aka GTA w/auto), is the sporty trimmed model with twin bulged hood and GT stripes along the lower body. The XL has stainless moldings around the lower mid-section of the car. The Fairlane name comes from Henry Ford's Estate in Detroit named Fair Lane.

For consignment, an original Fairlane GT-A "C" code car. In layman terms we are talking, (C Code) a 289ci V8 2bbl, GT, (sportier trimmings and moldings), and A for an automatic transmission. However, the days of being a mundane and pedestrian GT are long gone for this 10 year old rotisserie restored and modified runner as a built 427ci side oiler V8 now resides between the Crystal Inferno inner fenders. So grab your picnic basket, blanket and head to your nearest lea to frolic in the butterfly grasses. Oh, and you'll get there in a real hurry if you need to!

Exterior
A 2 door hardtop version, all bathed in deep end of the pool Crystal Red Inferno Metallic paint, which presents as all rust free, straight steel with well minded gaps that show the countless hours involved in achieving perfect alignment and straightness makes you the belle of the ball when you arrive in this skate. Stacked front headlights flank a horizontal large egg crate shaped grille, and a shiny bumper resides below. Just above is a Crites fiberglass 427 ram air hood that is near flawless and retained by chrome tethered hood pins. A tan stripe for some racing accenting is seen just above the rockers on either side. The back of the car features vertical rectangular tail lights, and a squared off roll pan with a shiny bumper below. All badging is pristine, as are window trimmings and glass. 17 and 18-inch mirror-finish chrome multi spoke wheels are on all 4 corners and are wrapped in 225/47ZR17's in front and slightly larger 275/50ZR18's on back.

Interior
Attention to detail and all buttoned up are two terms that come to mind when swinging the doors open. Low back buckets which use vented vinyl for tuck and roll inserts for the seats and lower backs, and some shiny smooth black vinyl for the bolsters and upper backs all in parchment. A chromed trimmed bar creates a tub for the seats. In the center, a factory console races from the back to the dash, and houses the custom Hurst shifter. This is within a mirror polished aluminum curved tray which creates the console. In front is an original dash, with an AutoMeter aftermarket white face tachometer bolted to the column. A wood rimmed 3 spoke billet steering wheel fronts this dash, and below a foursome of aftermarket gauges hangs above clean pristine saddle tan carpeting. On the back is a bench in the same styling as the buckets, and above is a parchment headliner in vinyl which is nice and tight.

Drivetrain
A C code in the VIN denotes a 289ci V8 and this information is backed up by the Marti Report, which is included with the car. However, during the redux the small block was ditched in favor of a circa 1967 427ci side oiler V8 which has been fitted with the best of everything including 10.5:1 compression pistons, forged rods and a Howards hydraulic roller camshaft to make a consignor stated approximate 490hp. On top is a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock intake manifold. Some black ribbed bolt ons are seen within this very clean, supple hose, shiny, chromed accented engine and the mill is supported in the bay by trick front motor mounts. A March serpentine system keeps the accessories turning and a Wizard's cooling system with twin Spac cooling fans keeps things at the perfect temperature. On the back is a fully built Art Carr C6 3-speed automatic with a 2800rpm stall converter. Way back is a Ford 9-inch rear axle with Motive 3.50 gears, a Tru-Trac Posi unit and bulletproof axles. Exhaling is accomplished through Hooker headers, and a 3" Flowmaster exhaust.

Undercarriage
Well restored with no rust, and just nice black surfaces of straight rust-free steel. In front is a custom RSS power rack and pinion steering kit and RSS independent strut suspension. A 4 link with coil overs is reserved for the back, and RSS disc brakes are upfront and Wilwood disc brakes for the rear. This is a good thing as these heavy cars were noted for their poor braking with the all manual drums which proved to be not enough for the horsepower produced. We note a custom fuel tank with an electric Weldon fuel pump and also that the unibody has been tied together with subframe connectors. One could call the undercarriage showroom quality with improvements, all well done and looking good!

Drive-Ability
This car was an immediate hit with my crack decoder so he drove and I sat in the passenger's seat. It is good it's an automatic, because despite his wealth of automotive knowledge, he has questionable motor skills with his legs, and tends to stall the clutched cars…just sayin'! Anyway I digress to the test track where it performed swimmingly with only the clock and horn not showing up for work, not unlike our former Photographer…

A great restoration, well done and attentive to detail. A 427ci V8, automatic transmission, and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. A perfect interior, keeping the original look, and pristine undercarriage, and sportier than standard exterior. A must see for the Fairlane aficionado as it is truly one of the nicer examples of said car in our sacred halls of the Classic Auto Mall.
