1971 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle

1971 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle

In lieu of the fact of being in production for just 13 years – less time than the Cadillac CTS nameplate – the Chevrolet Chevelle has been heralded as one of the best, most accomplished vehicles ever to don the bowtie. It shared a platform with the El Camino and Monte Carlo: though it was available in convertible, two-door, four-door, and station wagon-wagon body styles, the multivariate Chevelle also share it's A-body platform with the El Camino, and the 1970-'72 Monte Carlo (though it was coded as a G-body in the latter). Despite wearing one of the most famous nameplates of all time, Chevrolet has yet to revive the name. Though we've heard rumblings and rumors over the years, Chevrolet has vehemently denied claims that a new Chevelle is in the works.

For consignment, the year to have the Chevelle was 1971. From its sporty grille to the rear bumper with the round tail lights inserted within and miles of orange metallic paint with silver wide racing stripes, you can turn heads and the tires with this supercharged ass kicker.

Exterior
Steeped in Orange metallic which is now covering virtually all the steel parts there is no rust in sight thanks to the skilful hands of R&R Auto Body. Near perfectly applied silver stripes race over the reverse scooped hood with its cut out for the air cleaner, pause at the roof and pick up again on the gently sloping trunk. The finish is pristine, and all chromed trimmings are excellent. Badging is correct, and from top, (which is highlighted by lighted smoked glass), to bottom, (which is a stainless rocker), front (which is the original bowtie egg crate grille) to back (housing the taillights in the bumper) this car is definitely tightly buttoned up. Put a set of 15-inch Centerline wheels on all 4 corners thrown on for extra style and bling… It's show time!

Interior
A typical but really nice SS door panel with some vertical tuck and roll greets us as we slip into the nicely preserved buckets in front. These cozy up to the center hump with a B&M shifter and small fire extinguisher and in the back is a matching black vinyl bench seat with a pair of speakers sitting on the outboard sides. Up front, below the padded dash top, is a simple black textured dash with several add ons which include a trio of chrome plated toggles, the full gamut of AutoMeter gauges, and a shift light strapped to the column. The original SS badged steering wheel fronts this dash. This car's factory heater slides are still present and the components are still present. Black carpeting covers the floors, and above is a slightly sagging black vinyl headliner.

Drivetrain
A stunner if you will upon opening the hood, it is showroom shiny, and sports a 355ci Chevrolet V8 hiding under all that polished aluminum. Topping this mill off is a pair of Holley 750cfm carbs residing on top of a BDS 6-71 supercharger. In back is a TH350 transmission and putting that power to the pavement is a 10 bolt rear axle.

Undercarriage
Much like the topside, very nicely done with no rust and structurally solid as a rock. Seen are front power disc brakes and rear power drums, independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear. A nice clean exhaust system with headers and Flowmaster mufflers runs rearward to chrome exhaust tips.

Drive-Ability
This car lit right up, and ran beautifully on the test track. Plenty of acceleration from the 355 cubes, and good handling. Braking was solid and all other functions were working!

A great presentation, fine runner and all very nicely finished off, particularly in the engine bay, but really all over. Great color combo, nice powerful mill, and all good on the SS Malibu trim Chevelle front.
