1968 Chevrolet Camaro

1968 Chevrolet Camaro

In 1966 Mustangs were flying out of Ford showrooms, and Chevrolet needed an answer. After many secret meetings, and covert internal press events, engineers unveiled the official name for what had been known up to this point as XP-836. Camaro was the chosen namesake, and immediately the question became “but what does it mean?”. This question has no official linguistic answer, but as Chevrolet marketing people would answer “It's an animal that eats Mustangs!”

For consignment, a nice slightly modified Chevrolet Camaro from its second year of offering to the public. Purchased by our consignor in 2021 from the prior owner who kept it for 28 years, this car has a nice paint job, a 383ci stroker V8 with paperwork on the build, and a modern fuse panel. That makes this ride not only a good looker but also a cooker. Read on and prepare to be impressed.

Exterior
A very nicely done color change from Island Teal to the present beautiful silver with dual stripes racing over the hood and decklid. A few bubbles and flaws are noted in the finish but nothing to detract from the overall nicety. Leading the way is a blacked-out egg crate grille that supports a pair of inboard parking lights and outboard headlights that appear to float in the sea of black. A mustache thin chrome bumper is below and above is a reverse scooped hood complete with black painted stripes that show some misalignment between the hood and header panel. Out back, the stripes continue on the short trunk lid and race up and over the small but effective rear spoiler is attached in matching black. Chrome drip moldings, window surrounds, handles mirrors and brite work is all in very good condition with nary a sign of any pitting or fading. Modern 17" Boyd Coddington polished saw blade style wheels are on all corners and are wrapped in blackwall rubber and accentuate the awesome stance this car has when viewed from the side.

Interior
Black high back Procar racing bucket front seats covered in vinyl and cloth and a rear bench seat in its factory black vinyl are in good condition. Black carpeting covers all floor surfaces and presents with a pronounced fade to orangish red. A Grant Pro steering wheel sits atop a tilt column and fronts a deep set silver gauge cluster on the angled in dash front which is filled with AutoMeter carbon fiber Ultra-Lite gauges. Dash central holds a texture black insert which houses the climate control sliders and an aftermarket AM/FM digital radio. This panel is framed by a ribbed chrome trimming and has an ashtray hanging below. A black headliner is tear and blemish free but does present with heavy sagging throughout. Door panels are black vinyl covered and are looking good with the exception of the faded black armrests. Sitting in the middle of the hump is a Hurst Pro-Matic 2 shifter with a black ball topper.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a gleaming 383ci V8 of which our consignor has the paperwork for. This mill has aluminum Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder heads, an Edelbrock Performer RPM camshaft and a single Edelbrock 800cfm 4-barrel carburetor feeding it through an Edelbrock intake. A 3-speed automatic TH350 is on back. Waaay back is a 10-bolt rear weighing in with a 3.42 ratio and Positraction. Our consignor notes that he has re-gasketed the engine and transmission as well as installing a new radiator.

Undercarriage
All very clean with an all black finish with only light surface rust where the paint has chipped off. Very solid down below and everything appears as it has been well taken care of under here. Independent coil springs for the front and leaf springs with traction bars for the rear, and power disc brakes are seen both fore and aft. Magnaflow provides the exhaust and mufflers which start with snakelike headers and worms its way rearward, each side ending just behind the rear tires.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and a bit of time to warm up, and we were off to the test track. This car has a Jesus bar grabbing acceleration, decent handling, and good brakes. All functions were working at the time of this test track tool around, and it is a satisfying car to the eye.

With some modifications, a clean engine bay, an updated interior, and stunning undercarriage this is a goer and a shower. Great color, nice stripes, blingy wheels and a nice stance and no rust. That sums it up for this car whose namesake means it eats Mustangs. Race on!
