1936 Ford Model Y

1936 Ford Model Y

E.T. Gregorie was tasked to draw a replacement for the British version of the Model A, which shouldered a huge cost penalty due to the Royal Automobile Club's fiscal-horsepower tax formula. The Model Y's delightfully raked Gregorie lines would be scaled up and transferred virtually intact to the larger U.S. Ford line. Rarely seen on American soil, this Ford sponsored, and British built pocket-sized Model Y may grab you because of its rarity, or because it's a project for the restorer who is looking for a challenge.

For consignment a scaled down Model A for the British market, presenting as an older restoration. A barn find of sorts but more along the lines of a car removed from long term storage, the exterior and interior will need some TLC but when finished you will have a rare Ford collectible. Bloody well right!

Exterior
Born in Essex England, it eventually made its way across the pond, it is now leading a restored life fresh from storage here in the USA. It has a full black vinyl roof showing on top of the older black paint on this all-steel Briggs body. New running boards have been put on, and the wire wheels are fully restored and painted cream with shiny hubs. These wheels are wire and wrapped in newer rubber with tubes. Overall, the body presents well but the chrome of the door handles does have pitting and delamination. Amazingly, the flip up signal indicators are still present and accounted for look just fine. Chrome bumpers, both fore and aft and looking good and on the rear, we see the spare tire and fold down luggage rack. Spit spot I say old chap!

Interior
A swing of the suicide door and we can see work has been done for this interior. Door panels are red leather and are in splendid condition. 2 Oxblood leather bomber style buckets are in front, and since it's a right hand driver, all controls are on the opposite side from the standard Model A. Upfront is a full metal dash painted black and in front of the large bakelite steering wheel is a small rectangular metal panel that houses original gauges which are an amp gauge, a speedometer and a fuel level gauge. A simple Oxblood leather bench seat sprawls between the rear doors and appears to never have been sat in. All of this floats in a sea of Oxblood carpet, that while slightly dirty, remains stain free and up above is a nice taut headliner.

Drivetrain
A lift of either cowl and we can see a fully restored albeit dusty and patinaed engine bay. Resting in the bay is a 56.9ci L-headed 4-cylinder making 22hp. This is fed by a side draft 1-barrel carburetor, and on the back is a 3-speed manual transmission with a rebuilt clutch. The rear axle is a 5.50 geared version. Also, within the engine bay is a vintage Essolube motor oil can, specifically for your Ford.

Undercarriage
All cleaned up and restored, even though we couldn't get this one on our lift due to the narrow track width. Surface rust is present on untreated parts and the floor pans are wood then it turns back to metal at the back of the undercarriage. Transverse leaf springs are on all 4 corners, and mechanical drum brakes are also being used on all 4's.

Drive-Ability
While complete and turning over by hand, we did not attempt to start this old Brit.

Not often seen here in the good ole US of A, but this one made it, and nearly made it to the fully restored status, but alas it will still require some blood sweat and tears to finish her up. Just needing some TLC and a once over to get her back on the road and you'll be the talk of not only the town but of the vintage Ford community in your area.
