1967 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

1967 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

Residing on the African Savannah and confronted with a threat, the sleek, nimble, and fast Impala will take flight to outrun or confuse its competitor. Aptly named, the Chevrolet version introduced in 1958, continued to emulate its animal namesake through years of design modifications and power options made available. In 1967, the jet age was in full swing, and automobile designers were transitioning from nonfunctional visual embellishments, to sleek, cleaner line designs for their cars. Engineers also caught on that more power will attract more buyers, and the “race” was on!
This immaculately finished in 2017, frame off restored version of the 1967 Chevrolet Impala in drop top format includes a beautiful exterior restoration, a 4bbl carburetor upgrade to an already stout 327ci V8, and a new top. A turquoise interior drop top, loaded with chrome, and visually stunning when viewed in person with its smooth lines, restored dash, Impala logo rally steering wheel, and very clean engine bay.

Exterior
Fully restored, all panels show as straight and blemish free with little to no flaws seen in the miles deep application of Emerald Turquoise paint. The chrome body trim and bumpers, as well as the shiny veed out egg crate grille are very clean and rust free, and just the right amount of brightwork has been used for the grille surround, wheel well trim, and window surrounds. Within the wide doors are a hinged quarter window, just aft of the A pillar, that is operated by a crank in the door panel. The cranked main door windows are trimmed in thin stainless, and operate smoothly, and are free and clear of any imperfections. This also holds true for front glass and the clear plastic window in the rear of the like new white canvas convertible top as it shows no problems. Adding to the look of the overall car, silver headlight trim adorns the 4 front headlights. Moving back on the sides we note 327 crossed flag badging on the front fenders as well as the Impala logo and script on the rear quarter panels. On back are the standard 3 taillights, (on every Impala), held within a single lens and a shiny bumper below with dual exhaust tips peeking out from behind each rear tire. To finish this car, deep dish 15-inch rally wheels are inside of like new 215/70R15 blackwall rubber all around.

Interior
Opening the doors and turquoise straight molded vinyl with some thin chromed accenting, long wide crossing embossments, and white knobbed cranks are on these panels. Inside floating in a sea of medium pile gray carpeting are beautiful low back bucket seats draped in smooth turquoise vinyl bolsters with tuck and roll inserts. The rear bench stretching across the back of the car has the same pattern and holds the leaping Impala logo top center. The buckets sit within a turquoise molded plastic tubs with some thin chromed accenting. These seats appear as new because they are, being fully restored during the frame off job. The dash is all original and in clean GM form. Dash top shows no cracks or dimples and the black bezeled trio of round gauges front the driver. Down low is a ribbed aluminum band with various knobs and pulls along with the ignition. Dash central holds the chrome heater slides along with a modern AM/FM stereo with an iPhone adapter and an auxiliary port.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a showroom clean and detailed engine bay, sits a non original 327ci V8 and it just gleams. It is topped with a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor and is finished in a glorious orangish/red hue. Ribbed and polished valve covers are on for some bling and a TH350 3-speed automatic is bolted to the back. A 12-bolt Positraction rear axle is on as well. We note a new alternator has been installed and HEI electronic ignition is on to light the fire.

Undercarriage
The underside of this car shows just as nice as the top side with solid steel floors and rockers, and some new bolt ons throughout. Independent front coil spring suspension works with a 4 link and coil springs in the rear to steady your way through any curve. In the event that you need to slow down or stop, front disc brakes, and rebuilt rear drum brakes are power assisted. We note new fuel lines and a new fuel tank in this environment along with ceramic coated headers and 2.5" stainless exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers.

Drive-Ability
This restoration-skate fired right up and with a mighty roar we were off to the test track. Here it performed flawlessly with the top down exhibiting smooth acceleration and plenty of it, bias free panic stopping, and great handling for a large car. All functions were operational at the time of our drive.

A very tasteful restored version of an iconic Chevrolet Impala convertible makes this car eye candy to look at, but with a hidden secret in the power it can provide. Well done paint and mechanical upgrades make this “Gazelle” a street cruiser, or an animal if confronted…fight or flight.
