In early 1963 a team of engineers and designers got together at Pontiac and decided to focus more on street racing and power. The Tempest had been in production for a bit, and a more “muscular” powerful car was needed. Hence the acronym GTO or Grand Tempest Option became the code for the secret new development that would take place. John DeLorean actually claims the GTO came from the Italian Gran Turismo Omologato or Grand Touring Homologated, (certified), which in reality the car was never meant for grand touring, but to be the fastest straight-line Pontiac produced.
Presenting in very nice and racy condition, this V8 LS2 mill optioned car which in stock form pumps out 400hp and a sought after version is ready to rock and roll and smoke out the masses. A rare color, (1 of 340 built), 44K miles, and the addition of the Sport Appearance Package along with some upgrades in the horsepower department to sugarcoat the deal even further, make this consignment a great little piece of automotive fire for someone who wants to slip by the competition.
A burst of Brazen Orange can be seen when this car blows by you. The paint is very nice but does show with chips and scrapes on the rocker panels and front bumper of this title verified 44,027 clocked original mile car. This car is equipped with the Sport Appearance Package, meaning it has a more aggressive front fascia, recessed grille inserts, rocker extensions, a taller rear spoiler, and a rear fascia extension. A body matching neoprene bumper has the BMW-esque grilles deeply inserted and an air-dam below with fog lights on either side. On the back a rounded spoiler emulates the trunk shape and aero inset tail and backup lights curve with the lines of this rear. Dual exhaust peek out from underneath the GTO badged Brazen Orange rear roll pan. Nice 18-inch Boyd Coddington wheels with a polished finish and gray inserts are wrapped in Hankook staggered blackwall radials. Juicy!
Nicely presenting and equally as welcoming ebony leather buckets are in front, and a 2 plus 2 bench which are essentially 2 more individual attached buckets are in back. Black accenting is embroidered on the backs, (GTO… imagine that!), and the plastic tubs they reside in. These buckets have some power adjustments as well as a manual recline knob on the sides. All present as very clean, but the driver's exaggerated outer bolster has color loss and a notable degree of wear. A very clean dash, with a burnt orange background instrumentation and some smaller LED readouts and very clean controls are in the dash front. Seen in the center, a small LED display within a Blaupunkt AM/FM/CD Bluetooth head unit. Temp knobs are just above as are a pair of dash top gauges in pods and this dash center melts into a center console which features the Hinson short throw shifter with a orange stitched leather boot and handbrake with similar stitching in black leather. Billet aluminum pedals and an original steering wheel are noted. Lightly soiled mats cover black carpeting which is flooding the floors and a tight black fuzzy headliner hangs above. Nice!
Now things are going to get interesting...Under the dual scooped hood lies a LS2 6.0Liter V8 original to the car but beefed up in many ways. Fitted into the block, which has been align bored, is a polished crankshaft, high volume oil pump, new timing gears, Mahle flat top pistons, King XP bearings and a BTR PDS Stage 2 camshaft kit. BTR 5/16 pushrods, a BTR trunion kit, and LS7 lifters actuate the #243 cylinder heads which are sealed with LS9 head gaskets. An ARP stud kit ties everything together and a MagnaCharger supercharger feeds the oxygen end of things meanwhile EFI provides the fossils. A Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission is bolted on the back and has been upgraded with a Monster twin disc clutch and flywheel kits as well as a Tick throwout bearing. A 3.64 limited slip differential is way in the back.
In a nutshell, very clean, slight surface rust on the usual corrosive steel parts, but totally unremarkable. Beautifully preserved, and obviously never taken out in a snow/salt environment. Independent suspension and power disc braking all around. Solid as a rock down to the headers and Magnaflow dual exhaust system. Our consignor notes that a 450lph Walbro fuel pump was added to keep up with the necessary fuel demand.
Gotta love a low mileage piece of late model muscle, and this car does not disappoint. All good under this hood, and in the seat. Lightning fast acceleration, solid bias free braking and rail like handling. And I love the Brazen Orange and Ebony leather which I admit I'm a sucker for.
Taking a close look, this car needs some minor cosmetic TLC, but not enough to keep you from looking good going down the highway and still smoke em with ease. Wonderful interior, sporty exterior, racy wheels and well over the factory rated 400 horses for this goat. Grab this baby by the horns and prepare to go for an E ticket ride.
