1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28

1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28

A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race of Champions or IROC would pit all-star drivers from numerous venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars. Except for the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet, and they chose to feature the Camaro.

This IROC version of the 1988 Camaro is in full IROC street garb. With special decal badging, a low slung windshield, some fairings, a rarely seen non T-top roof, and a powerful 5.7 Liter tuned port fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that were added to this version of the Camaro. An original 1 owner, 6,593 documented original miles, always garaged and never driven in rain, and all its service records and documentation paperwork from new, I foresee this Camaro in your future.

Exterior
Dark Red Metallic covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and front built in spoiler of the car. A curved glass rear greenhouse deck offering up plenty of storage, and a full steel roof is up top. IROC-Z badging in red fade is seen on each door, as well as 5.7 Liter Tuned Port Injection in orange decaling just above the rocker skirt on the front lower fender. Hood lovers and fog lights are optioned on this car as is black door edge molding. Polished 16-inch 5 spoke Camaro silver rims are attached to all 4 corners and noted as “front” and “rear” wheels because of different offsets. Overall, this car presents as factory fresh and showroom new with nary a flaw seen by this writer's eyes.

Interior
A snazzy gray tweed and broadcloth bowls you over in bucket seat configuration shows Camaro stitched into the lower seat back. The bolsters are smooth and all bordered with varying degrees of gray piping. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats which individually fold down for rear compartment access. A black console and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Strangely enough, manual "crank" windows, manual locks and manual mirrors are equipped on the gray tweed door panels along with a black plastic sill, gray vinyl armrest, and carpeted lower panel. The factory steering wheel, leather wrapped I might add, fronts the deeply inset round gauge cluster which resides under a crack free black dash pad. Gray carpeting floods the floors and is topped with the factory gray carpeted mats. Up top, a tight gray broadcloth headline hangs tightly above.
Drivetrain
The original 5.7 Liter V8 making 230hp gives plenty of smooth power and is fed with Tuned Port electronic fuel injection. On back a 4-speed automatic transmission, (700 R4 Model). All this attached 10-bolt 3.27 Positraction rear axle. This mill, like the rest of the car, presents as factory new with no patina, dirt or corrosion.

Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the untreated suspension components down below but all else is finished in a factory gray with a light dusting of factory dark red paint.and driveshaft and rear pumpkin. Floor pans are solid, as is unibody construction and even the driveshaft has succumbed to any surface rust. Rear disc brakes are on and front discs all power brakes are on. Independent coil spring front suspension, and a torque arm and coil spring suspension for the rear is seen. The OEM single exhaust with dual tailpipes also appears as new.

Drive-Ability
When my partner in crime and all around good guy explained to me that this car still smells new inside I couldn't fully grasp what I was hearing...that was until I slid my well-fed body behind the wheel. The new car smell overtook me, and I was harkened back to my mid 1980's memories with the windows down and screaming down the highway going to the shore. This car fired right up, and the test track proved all those memories true, a great cruiser, smooth accelerator, and good handling. The only thing not cool about this car was the AC didn't blow cold, but the inrush of fresh air made up for it.
A babied, barely used, and showroom new example of the IROC Z28 right out of 1988. A lovely car, wonderful color scheme, and a good driver. Always garaged and always kept from the elements, it's probably the nicest example out there. Stop by our Hallowed Halls and let this Camaro IROC your world!
