2000 Lincoln LS

2000 Lincoln LS

The Lincoln LS is a four-door, five-passenger luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford's Lincoln division over a single generation from 1999–2006. Introduced in June 1999 for model-year 2000, the LS featured rear-wheel drive and near 50/50 weight distribution and was available with a V8 or V6, the latter initially offered with a manual transmission. The LS shared the Ford DEW98 platform with the Jaguar S-Type and the Ford Thunderbird. Trim levels ranged from the base V6 model to the Special Edition V8 LSE trims in 2004, with revised front and rear fascia, taillights and fog lights, and front grille. LS models were manufactured at Ford's Wixom Assembly Plant until production ended on April 3, 2006 and the plant was idled as part of Ford's The Way Forward. Approximately 262,900 were manufactured, including 2,331 with manual transmissions and 1,500 LSE editions.

So good was the new import-fighter from Lincoln that, when it went up against 30 contenders from three continents, it emerged as winner of Motor Trend's 2000 Car of the Year competition. This was a particularly significant achievement as that was the year Motor Trend dispensed with its separate Import Car of the Year award, reasoning that American automobiles should be held to the same standards as all others, regardless of origins. Proudly offered for consignment, a one owner, custom ordered and purchased new, original paint Lincoln LS right out the turn of the millennium. The perfect blend of upscale performance and luxury, and a highly optioned automobile, and this grocery getter/sports sedan does not disappoint!

Exterior
The original coating of three stage Ivory Parchment, an upcharge paint color, covers the exterior of this sedan and is looking just dandy. No rust is noted and only a few minor chip offs are seen on this steel and aluminum bodied ride. This wonderful preservation has been accomplished by tedious care, garage storage, and non usage during the winter months. Straight steel panels, and good gaps are noted and a smattering of chrome and stainless steel, all dressed up and polished adorns this car on the exterior. Flush mount integrated dual headlights frame the black grille and just below is a body colored neoprene crash bumper. Clean flowing lines down the sides along with black rocker trimming create beautiful undulation, especially for the passenger compartment with a power operated sunroof. A squared off rear end with wrap-around taillights finishes off the back end along with dual chrome exhaust tips peeking out from under the bumper. Nice 16" aluminum Lincoln logo 5 spoke wheels are seen on all 4 corners.

Interior
Opening any of the 4 doors, we are met with Deep Charcoal leather heaven. And if this is not enough, throw in some beautiful Walnut burl panels on the dash, and even intermixing them on the steering wheel and the door panels. Just quintessential Lincoln. As expected, we see plenty of convenience options like power windows, power seats, climate control, cruise control, a sunroof, Bluetooth capability, and a factory Alpine AM/FM/Cassette stereo. More burl for the automatic shifter knob, which can be moved right and down and shifted manually just if you decide to get a little feisty on your way home from the soccer game. This shifter resides in an ergonomic console along with the traction control switch, a cup holder and a padded top storage bin. More charcoal for the clean carpeting and peering up we note a felted headliner framing the electric sunroof. Light age folding is noted on the leather wrapped front buckets and the rear bench appears to have been hardly used.

Drivetrain
A spicy 3.0 DOHC liter V6 with EFI is attached to a 5R55N 5-speed automatic transmission. Putting the power to the rear tires is a 3.58 conventional rear axle. This combination is capable of 210 hp and a 0-60 time of 7.4 seconds. Nice numbers for a 20 year old sport sedan.

Undercarriage
Very clean and rust free, save for very light surface rust on steel parts. There are no areas of concern under here with a strong unibody and near perfect flooring. Independent Macpherson strut suspension is on for both the front and rear as are power disc brakes. The OEM stainless steel exhaust system handles the exhale efficiently and effectively.

Drive-Ability
On our test track it gave a firm, but comfortable ride and the interior gave generous space for even my ample frame. Acceleration was on par with most modern sedans of the era and shifting was smooth. Under panic braking the car came to a bias free stop and even after my drive I continued to play with the various functions and doo-dads that this Lincoln has to offer. A very nice driving car.

For the suburbia show of success, not just a sports car, but why not a sport sedan. Mike Nicks nailed it in his summation of the 2000 Lincoln LS, "There's just a 'rightness' about the whole coherence of the design that tells me Lincoln's marketing and engineering people have worked well together.". Belt the kids in and find a winding road to put a smile on your face, then stop at the store on your way home, to pick up a gallon of 2 percent!
