1974 Triumph TR6

1974 Triumph TR6

James May describes the Triumph TR6 as “The blokiest bloke's car ever built”. Translated into non-British English that means it's a car that appeals to the sort of men, (and women for that matter), who like to roll up their sleeves, open up their toolbox, and work on their own engines. Preferably with a strong cup of tea nearby. Designed by Karmann, its squarish design made this cat the largest selling Triumph of all time.

For consignment, a 1974 Version of the TR6 with some performance enhancements on the transmission, suspension and a new interior. Also, a rebuilt engine, and many inside upgrades. Read on me droogs.

Exterior
Bathed in Sapphire Blue, this exterior is all original, no rust and is a respray from 1989. It sports reflective pinstripes, has a matching hardtop with storage rack, and the convertible top and originally complete with reflectors still shining brightly. Upfront those pesky rubber Dagmar have been removed for a sleeker look and chrome is all excellent. A round headlight resides on each front fender corner and the sloping squarish design bonnet runs from shiny grille to windscreen. The car comes with a tonneau cover and boot cover. On the back, topping the squarish boot lid, is an original luggage rack. The rear of this car is just so different it is in my category of one of the nicest asses, on a car with that squared off vertical rear panel, horizontal wrap around tail lighting and a dagmar-less chromed bumper below. Bloody cracking design Karmann me mate.

Interior
With top down the first improvement stares you in the face in the form of a Moss Motors roll bar. A sea of new blue carpet panels and driveshaft tunnel coverings is like new, as are the recovered seats also in lighter blue. A mounted steering wheel fronts a freshly veneered dash, (look ma no cracks…a rarity in these TR's). There is a dash mounted tachometer, and all new door pads and knobs as well as new window regulators all in Shadow Blue for this snappy interior.

Drivetrain
The 2.5 Liter inline 6-cylinder engine was completely rebuilt at 103,727 clocked miles. All is new save for the refurbished crankshaft, and rods and inside are new County pistons with Hastings bulletproof rings and King tri metal bearings and a German crankshaft damper. A new UK P1 camshaft with 35-65/65‐35 timing and a .378 valve lift. Cylinder heads were milled to 3.388 and now it has a 10:1 compression ratio. New SU HS6 carbs feed this electric fan cooled mill with an electric fuel pump and new lines. On the back is a new Toyota HVDA 5 speed conversion kit with a new clutch throw out bearing. Power goes rearward to a Goods Nissan 300ZX posi rear. A real performer, probably one of the fastest TR6's I've driven, and it's been many through our doors.

Undercarriage
Rust free all urethane bushings, Goods spring and trailing arm bushings. Stainless brake lines and a lightweight steering rack in aluminum. KONI front shocks and KYB tube conversion shocks on the rear. Competitive Mini Lite wheels from England are wrapped by new 205/65R15 rubber gummy bands. All like new or newly installed.

Driveability
Any TR that comes through our doors, I'm driving it, and this was freshly arrived when I took it for a tool. As noted, this is the fastest TR6 driven to date, it downshifted with high rpm ease, and handled like it was on rails. Sounded great with its Ansa exhaust and Moss Jet coated headers. I would definitely not kick this car out of bed for eating crackers! Bloody well right.

Overall a like new TR6 completely rebuilt all over. A snappy drivetrain, beautiful exterior and newly covered interior, all in Sapphire Blue proving unequivocally all that glitters is indeed not gold. Thx Karmann for your pennage.
