1965 Factory Five 427 Cobra Replica

1965 Factory Five 427 Cobra Replica

Technology has consistently delivered more value and a lower price. The same general principles apply to component cars. The application of new technologies in an old-world industry is what sets the Factory Five company apart from the crowd. Computers and CNC technology are the foundations on which the Factory Five revolution was built. They design their chassis parts, production tooling, and body shapes with the latest CAD/CAM technology. They use SolidWorks® computer design software and HP hardware to design all of their cars. Computer-based technologies drive everything they do, including design, pre-production quality assurance, pilot production, product bill of materials and packlists, manufacturing cut lists, CNC laser cutting, robot trimming, and welding.

For consignment, is a blue streak in the form of a Factory Five Replica Cobra. Complete with side pipes and wide stripes, and many other goodies that emulate the original but at a budget that most can take on and have a really cool driver. Flashback to 1997 and our consignor had an 1989 Mustang GT that he was unable to sell, so thanks to a well-placed advertisement by Factory Five, the gears started turning and things started to happen. Like most of us, an original Cobra roadster is out of the budget, so our consignor did what he knew he could accomplish. He melded the kit from Factory Five with his Mustang GT and the result you see before you is the final result. Many months of planning, wrenching and researching in a single car garage brought this build to fruition and has been enjoyed by our consignor since 1998 and now it's time to pass the torch for the next enthusiast to enjoy.

Exterior
All fiberglass, all blue, (save for the chrome trim and wide white racing stripes) and all buttoned up this car presents nicely. Save the front bumpers, we only see the pushers in front and pushers and a thin bar bumper back. Please, we don't need the extra weight. A wonderful stance with a combination of the flared fenders which gracefully frame chrome 17-inch Cobra R wheels with some low-profile rubber, and a hood scoop and we are left in a blue gaze. We note some light cracking of the seams in the fiberglass, particularly on the tops of the front and rear fenders. We note pins on the front of the hood and lockable turn handles on the rear, making this a non-hinged lift off hood. Down low are polished header tubes and sidepipes. A chromed roll bar, and a racing hinged rear quarter gas cap, and let the clutch out.

Interior
On the dash we see Autometer and VDO gauges in a similar arrangement to what the original Cobra would have. These are embedded into a veneered wood dashboard and are surrounded by numerous labeled toggles, lights and an AM/FM/Cassette stereo, all fronted by a wood rimmed steering wheel. Black vinyl bomber style buckets float in a sea of black carpet all good and sport a RCI 3-inch safety harness. Wind wings and tinted see-through sun visors are attached to the curved, raked rearward windshield. Black carpet floods the floors and rear bulkhead of this roadster, and the door panels are adorned with more wood applique and black carpet.

Drivetrain
Lifting off the ultra-light fiberglass hood, and I certainly wasn't feeling blue when I laid my eyes on the 5.0 Liter V8 courtesy of a 1989 Mustang. Factory Ford EFI, also from the same pony, feeds this mill a finely tuned diet of air and fossils. On the back of the mill is a 5-speed manual transmission in the form of a Tremec T5. Way back the axle is an 8.8-inch Ford Tracloc rear axle with 3.55 gearing.

Undercarriage
All clean underneath with a tubular powder coated frame, and all aluminum floor pans. All solid and rust free it is all well done underneath. Disc brakes are all around and an independent suspension with coil springs is on front, and a 4 link with springs is on the rear and we are expertly planted on terra firma.

Drive-Ability
The candles all lit right up and ran strong through the entire test drive. Snappy acceleration, good handling and our test driver reported just a little happy on the rear end when applying the power. All functions worked, save for the fuel gauge and it stuck to the road like glue.

Blue is the globally recognized color for a Cobra, and that is burnt into my brain after seeing this example, I'm sold! Lots of power in from the 5.0 Liter full of horses, and a clean example. A few faults in the fiberglass but overall a great driver, good handler, and awesome looker. And did you know blue also represents the meanings of freedom, imagination, creativity, wisdom, confidence, and inspiration. Now that's a Factory Five if I've seen one!
