1985 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur

1985 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur

Saloon is nothing but the British name for Sedan. Both are identical body-types. Sedans/Saloons are generally 4-door cars with separate space for luggage, engine and seating. These should accommodate 4 or more people and have a fixed roof.

This particular 1985 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur has been finished in the most desired of color combinations featuring a silver and black exterior over black hides with red piping and black Wilton carpeting, and a beautifully finished trunk with more black Wilton wool carpeting and that proper British red piping! A remarkable example that shows just 62,447 miles on the odometer today and looks just as luxurious as the day it rolled off the assembly line.

Nicely preserved…a mix of black and silver shows a few chips, areas of slight markings and staining. Overall, it is well done with paint and bodywork having been performed on the passengers lower door and passengers lower rear quarter panel, the rest is purportedly the original paint that was applied in Crewe. Chrome and badging look clean and shiny and the beautiful RR grille in near perfect condition and the flying lady atop front the bonnet. Speaking of which, is long and luxurious as it makes its way back to the large greenhouse, which is covered with a lightly faded black vinyl top. A few areas of the top are showing some bubbling, an indication of flaws under the vinyl. The large boot deck with proper badging curves downward and frames the oversized square/rectangular design taillights. Pristine RR logo-ed wheel covers have a black matching band near the center, and wheels are wrapped with blackwall Kumho rubber. All in all, in cracking shape mate.

Comparable to a bank safe door, it swings effortlessly, but its weight can be witnessed when doing so, but you can have the chauffeur open it for you. Black hide, wood burl, and Wilton carpet make up the panels of the doors which house shiny inserts for the power windows, and door handle. The wood burl on the tops of the doors is showing varying degrees of delamination ranging from light cracking to missing sections of the heavily applied lacquer. Placing your bum firmly in the black hide covered buckets, which are showing age cracks and color loss with the worst being the driver's bucket, you'll get accustomed to plentiful padding and the striking red piping. Armrests over the center console, which houses every control you could possibly need regarding the seats. Infinite adjustability is the mantra for the seats and mirror toggles and an ashtray are seen here as well, all framed in actual wood burl. Moving to the rear bench there will be plenty of room for the queen bee and her gentleman caller. If the mood strikes you, pull down one of the folding picnic tables (in beautiful lacquered burl) and have a spot of tea and some popovers prior to pulling up to the boardroom. The dash is loaded with instrumentation, climate controls, burl, and leather. It presents very clean as does the black Wilton wool carpeting …blimey!

A pop of the bonnet and we are greeted by a clean, but patina covered engine bay. Grabbing the center of attention, is the 6.75 Liter V8 that is original to the car. It sports electronic fuel injection and a 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission. All quite right! You're bloody well right.

Undercarriage is well preserved, coated in rustproofing and black paint, nary a sign of any rust or structural problems. A rather large dent is noted in the rear center of the undercarriage. Meanwhile, independent suspension, and 4-wheel power disc brakes, and we are all buttoned up. Bob's your uncle.

I had the pleasure to take this car out for a tool around Morgantown, and it drove swimmingly. Rides like a dream, (or like you are on a Silver Cloud...OH WAIT!). Noted is the A/C system needs a recharge. Otherwise it was a smashing, (thankfully the Brit version of this word!), car to drive, and during the short jaunt, received several waves and whistles, but it could have been the spirit of our departed Sir Lawrence, who's passion for people was only overshadowed by his passion for British luxury cars.

We have a really nice car here, in good low mileage condition, including owners' books in original leather pouch, and a recent appraisal. Go ahead, live it up! Chip chip cheerio and all that rot!
