The Expediciones De Las Americas is the most badass road trip you've never heard of… A couple of decades after starting the Jamboree, Mark A. Smith led an expedition of Jeeps on the longest off-road trip in history, trekking 21,000 miles over some of the world's most inhospitable terrain, from the southernmost tip of Chile to the northern reaches of Alaska. In the 4x4's first public outing, it was driven up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. When asked what it was, the driver replied simply, “It's a jeep.” Two years later, Willys-Overland filed a trademark application.

For consignment, a CJ (Civilian's Jeep) version 7 from 1982. This restoration goes through a painstakingly meticulous process down to every nut and bolt being weatherproof, and plenty of add ons to immerse yourself into this one. Always garage kept, never in foul weather and it has not been off-roaded since completion. Here we go!

A thorough redo was done to every panel on this Jeep then it was top coated in miles deep black paint with rocker application of Speedliner undercoating. An upgraded bumper was put on in front and it has a winch plate complete with a 12K winch, a nerf bar, D-rings and 2 sets of Fox lights. Behind this, LED headlamps flank the iconic Jeep black steel grille and above is the simple steel hood complete with a high lift jack assembly. Fenders with black plastic flares lead back to the slightly raked back windshield and the black full roll cage sports a canvas sunshade bikini top. Our consignor states that a tan colored full soft top and matching 2 piece tan doors will come with the purchase. 31x10.5R15 knobby mud terrain tires are wrapping tan painted American Racing wheels with locking hubs. A spare tire relocation kit has been added and moves the spare from the back of this rig to the rear passenger's compartment. Another heavy-duty rear bumper was added to the rear with more D-rings, a trailer hitch with a 3/7 prong wiring jack and LED tail lights just above.

As we make our way through the tan canvas half-door entry, we perch on top of one of 2 racing buckets covered in black vinyl and cloth. Some tearing and patching is noted on the outer bolster of the driver's seat. Between the buckets is a like new lock box console/armrest with obligatory cup holders in both the front and back. Upfront a like new metal black painted dash with a lineup of pulls, gauges and an upgraded Pioneer sound system with 4 speakers are all neatly mounted. The original steering wheel, wrapped with a thick cloth cover, is fronting this dash. Rhino lining in black is reserved for the floors and rear storage, making for an easy cleanup.

As I loosen the front lockdowns, and raise the hood and we are peering at a consignor stated new 350ci V8 engine and it is lightly patinaed condition. It is topped by a Edelbrock aluminum intake and Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor. Chrome is on for the dress up of the air cleaner lid and valve covers. A consignor stated rebuilt SM465 4-Speed manual transmission with 1st gear being a granny gear is bolted to the back. In front there is a Dana 30 axle, and on back an AMC 20 rear axle both with 3.54 gearing. Our consignor also states that the Dana 300 transfer case is also rebuilt.

In keeping with the get tough theme, no stone has been left unturned (or for that matter driven over!). Here we see a very clean undercarriage. The flooring and frame are finished in Speedliner undercoat and remain rust free. Minor surface rust has made an appearance on the Flowmaster dual exhaust system as well as a few of the suspension components. This truck features Skyjacker shocks for both the front and rear leaf sprung suspension and also has the added benefit of power steering. Disc brakes are in front, and drums for the back.

This beauty started right up and was ready to climb the walls and anything else we had here at Classic Auto Mall that it could drive over. So, I took it to the test track and everything was functioning beautifully. Good acceleration, plenty of power, all gearing 2 and 4 wheel drives were working, the gauges and heater fan all were working, and the sound system was awesome. The seats are comfy and in the open air one feels a sense of freedom, although when a semi goes by it makes you think about that exterior being right there!

A well restored and sorted rig that is just as at home in the urban jungle as it is in the trails. A combination of new and rebuilt components for the drivetrain make for a very reliable ride. Now we have a comfy, beautiful social climber, and mountain climber that can go virtually anywhere. And where it will not go, use the winch!
