1987 Chevrolet Blazer

1987 Chevrolet Blazer

The second-generation Blazer arrived in 1973. The SUV's wheelbase had grown by 2.5 inches, while its overall length swelled by 7.0 inches. On V-8 models equipped with the automatic transmission, Chevrolet installed a full-time four-wheel-drive system. Styling was evolutionary, although the second-generation SUV's squared-off fender openings and integrated roll-down tailgate window were relatively radical additions. Although the new Blazer initially was offered with a completely removable roof, the model sprouted a fixed steel roof over the front passenger compartment beginning in 1976. A removable roof cap over the rear meant that those seated in the back were still able to experience the wind in their hair should the mood strike.

For consignment, a large K5 Blazer with a low mileage replacement engine, a new lift kit, a Jasper rebuilt transmission, and fresh brake servicing. Ready to be driven and enjoyed as it is, but in need of some TLC that can be accomplished without months and months of downtime. This big Blazer's are hot, and this one is no exception with knobby tires and the necessary repair parts included. Read on and prepare to feel the desire to go off roading blaze into your heart.

Exterior
A respray of black has been applied to the slab sided steel panels that have decently gaps throughout. The paint has various chip offs, fading surface rust in various areas. We also note a few dents in the hood, but fear not as our consignor will include a spare straight hood with the purchase. On the sides of this truck is a shiny trim spear, K5 Blazer badging, and the upscale trimline Silverado badging. Some stainless surrounding trim highlights the wheel wells and breaks up all the black nicely. On the back is a fiberglass shell with slide open side windows and which is removable but requires 2 for ease of lifting. On either door is a large chromed side mirror and shiny bumpers are on front and rear with a few minor waves and dings. Lest we forget the chrome trimmed eggcrate grille, flanked on either side by stacked dual headlights. A set of 15-inch wheels with their black paint, dish-like shape, satin finish trim rings, and large central hub are all wrapped up with 35" knobby treaded BF Goodrich tires. A swing down tailgate concludes our tour and is equipped with an electric roll down window and satin finish trim work.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we are greeted with a deep red panel that has a satin aluminum insert for the door pull. This panel has an homologation of molded plastic, velour and carpet all spattered with a dash of chrome to highlight the red surfaces. There is a storage pouch attached as well. Inside red velour broadcloth buckets flank a large center console for storage and cup holding. A sprawling rear bench seat matches the front buckets in material and style, all the while providing room for 3. In front is the original dash, also utilizing red and black with more satin aluminum gauge highlighting, the heater and AM/FM/Cassette stereo, heater slides and trim bar in front of the passenger. Red carpeting, clean but with slight fading floods the floors and black steel is above the buckets. The fiberglass shell is the ceiling for the rear bench seat passengers, and also seen are red vinyl and carpeted side panels with a white inside to the shell. A simple black rubber mat for the back complete with the tailgate opening for extra storage way back. Unfortunately, under this mat there is significant invasive to the flooring and rear body crossmember. Our consignor has new replacement metal for these areas that are included with your purchase.

Drivetrain
Underneath the big hood is now a consignor-stated lower mileage replacement 350ci V8. Some surface rust is noted in this engine bay, but all is mechanically sound. Electronic fuel injection feeds this 350ci V8 and on the back is a Jasper rebuilt replacement 700R4 4-speed automatic with 2.73 axle configuration both front and rear. There was a recent tune up performed on this V8 to keep things running like a top.

Undercarriage
A mix of black undercoating, patina and surface rust make up the undercarriage. Invasive rust is noted in the aforementioned areas as well as some beginning to show through in the inner rockers. Leaf springs provide the suspension with new shocks and a new 3" lift kit installed. Power disc brakes are installed upfront, and power drums for the rear and all were recently serviced.

Drive-Ability
Slipping into the velour covered seats, we fired this truck up and were off to the test track. Here we experienced good acceleration, smooth shifting, and good handling. Braking was excellent and all functions were working nicely with the exception of the passenger's power window not moving up or down and the A/C needing a charge to blow cold again.

A drivable, go anywhere, project truck that has the right look, the right height and a rebuilt drivetrain. Once you get the minor rust issues resolved you are ready to step into this K5 Blazer and hit some trails as well as some shows. Turn the key and go!
