1999 Ford Mustang Cobra Convertible

The Ford SVT Mustang Cobra is a high-performance Mustang that has been heavily modified by Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT). Available in either coupe or convertible, the SVT Cobra's main calling cards are a totally different engine, a revised suspension, and an improved interior.

For consignment, a 1999 Mustang Cobra whose firepower comes from a 4.6 liter, 32-valve DOHC V8. While based on Ford's family of modular V8s, the Cobra's engine is considerably more advanced. The engine produces 320 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 317 ft-lbs. of torque at 4,750 rpm. Baby, the car's nickname is a 3 owner car, 29,965 verified actual miles, always female owned and always garage kept and covered. This SVT Cobra is not only number 175 of 4055 built for the 1999 model year but it is one of only 317 with its black and parchment color combo, and it's a convertible!

Exterior
All bathed in UA Ebony Clearcoat this car is one seriously menacing pony. A big front splitter goes mean and low to the ground and frames the otherwise Mustang front grille with hissing snake in its center. Rocker flared fairings hover below the throwback hockey stick cover above in the doors and rear quarter, and on back a high spoiler keeps things grounded. In lieu of chromed trimmings all is either Ebony Clearcoat or satin black as with the glass trimmings. A Parchment canvas convertible top in like new condition is on top and has a boot cover for when in the down position. Poised on the fenders are Cobras in chrome ready to strike. On back the triple taillights, now nice aero designed above a body matching mirrored COBRA lettered neoprene crash bumper. Large polished stainless exhaust tips peek out from either side under the bumper. Satin silver 17-inch Cobra wheels are all around, and you can see the big brakes within the spokes.

Interior
Medium Parchment sculpted high buckets are flanking a rounded center console in a matching Medium Parchment. These chairs have a perforated leather insert surrounded by smooth bolsters. A small 2 plus 2 rear seat is shoehorned in. In the console we see a factory shifter mounted within its leather boot, and as the center console rises to the dash it houses the Mach 460 AM/FM/Cassette & CD player as well as the heat and AC knobs before it takes the edge lines and forms them into dual curved “eyebrows” for the dash. This dash is a mix of light brown for the padded topper and Medium Parchment for the face, one side houses the instruments in their white-faced glory, and the other a small curved shelf and glove box below. This is all original equipment. Factory condition light brown carpeting is flooding the floors and is protected by matching carpeted mats. Nicely sculpted door panels in Medium Parchment are on either side with black rocker switches for the power windows and locks. All looking good and original.

Drivetrain
A numbers matching 4.6 Liter DOHC 32 valve V8 which produces a whopping 320hp is in and is fed by EFI. A Tremec T45 5-speed manual transmission is on back, and Ford provides the 8.8-inch 3.27 limited slip rear axle.

Undercarriage
Slightly patina cast aluminum aplenty and all looking just fine with solid unibody rails and the only surface rust seen is on the driveshaft and rear axle half shafts. Floor pans are excellent, and the factory installed exhaust system is noted coming from the engine on to the back exit. Independent coil spring suspension is on all 4 corners. Power disc brakes are up front and also on back.

Drive-Ability
A quick startup, lower the top and off to the test track this menacing black snake went. Here it handled very nicely, you can feel the 320 horses pushing you along, and braking brings all this fun to halt. All functions were working just swimmingly.

For its day it was a definite powerhouse. Today it's a mere classic with 320hp, a convertible top, and factory applied Ebony paint that is all excellent. All you have to do now is “pony” up the dough!
