1958 Buick Roadmaster Riviera

1958 Buick Roadmaster Riviera

Back in the day of the home office visit, doctors were very conscientious of patients pulling on to their property, seeing a Caddy and immediately coming to the conclusion that he's overcharging me! So the best kept secret was they all took on a "Buick" personna, eliminating this mystique. Doctors are smart, and certainly do not want to sell themselves short, so I give you the 1958 Buick Roadmaster. A Caddy in sheep's clothing!

We give you for consignment, a massive hunk of Detroit iron, with many options, steel as straight as a religious pastor, and conveniences no one else thought of in 1958. This beautiful example sports it's original interior which drips with late 50's styling, runs and drives like a dream, and all under the auspices of a Buick which with this car is definitely a misnomer as to luxury and well-heeled necessities.

Exterior
Leading off with a square pattern chromed grille, proudly displaying its smile above a large front bumper and residing above dual headlights under a visored steel front quarter panel, the steel sculpturing on this car goes on and on. Wrap around front and rear glass, heavy doors which conform to the front and rear glass along with the chromed trimming that undulates through them, and we have the beginnings of a design masterpiece. Nicely growing rear fins which become massively wide as they dive towards the rear bumper house the tail lighting and frame the 2-bedroom size trunk lid. Borrowing from the tri five Chevys a stainless ribbed panel covers what begins in the rear doors as a cove spear, runs its way rearward to the fins and has some nifty badging in 50's styled type font. Chrome or stainless trimmings edge virtually every panel of the steel which is perfectly painted in Polar Mist paint. The glass is all clear and wide white sidewall tires dwarfed by the massive slabs of steel is what this luxury low mileage, (54,900 plus), mile car rides on. Definitely a Caddy in Buick's clothing, and then some!

Interior
Virtually every option available has been ordered on this special vehicle, right down to the dealer installed compass mid windshield mounted at the headliner. Power windows, power seats, power steering, AC, and all within a padded ribbed vinyl covered dash which makes a play between the silver blue vinyl and plenty of aluminum panels to make up the dash. The large bakelite steering wheel with its badged center is worth the price of admission in itself! Black square stitched broadcloth is reserved for the front and rear bench inserts which have silver blue leather bolsters and surrounds and sport plenty of piping in between those panels. Nearly like new silver blue carpeting covers the floors and a pristine headliner is adhered tightly above. All conveniences are at the push of a button and even the starter is actuated by the gas pedal, just be sure you are in park!

Drivetrain
A heave upward of the massive hood reveals a 364ci V8 in minty condition. It sits within a beautifully preserved slightly patinaed engine bay and is all original. A 4-barrel carburetor feeds it the fossils to whisk you down the interstate, working with the Dynaflow 4-speed automatic and a gas saving? 3.23 rear axle. Power at your toe tips for sure.

Undercarriage
All in beautifully preserved 54,901 mile condition we note power drum brakes all around, a newer Stainless Works exhaust system, independent coil sprung front suspension, and a 4 link with coil sprung rear suspension. Solid as a rock for this undercarriage and with the mass of steel above, it is a requirement.

Driveability
Any well-heeled big Detroit iron finned car is a real treat to drive and this car was definitely an E ticket. Pressing the accelerator to start it was off to the test track where my partner in crime, our crack decoder and car guru enjoyed every minute of it. Plenty of acceleration perfectly proportioned to its mass took us gliding around and not a lot of roll even in tight corners. All power accessories worked, although the front seat was a bit finicky. The wipers were in op and with heavy braking it pulled to the right. Overall given its age it was very enjoyable to drive as well as impressive.

There are plenty of cool classics adorning our Hallowed Halls, then there are those standouts which in this writer's eyes are special for whatever reason. This car is definitely a standout with its loaded with options, large straight steel, and late 50's design is worth its weight in scratch. Just sit in it and you will be falling in Buick love, drive it and you will want it in your garage or collection.
