2003 Ford F150 Flareside
2003 Ford F150 Flareside Pickup
The Ford Motor Company, with its F-series, has long held the distinction of building the best-selling trucks in America. That distinction dates back many decades, as Ford's commercial Model A and AA variants were also the most popular in their day. The best-selling Ford truck of 1931 was the Closed Cab Pick-up, which brought passenger-car style and some new features to the market.
For consignment, an Orange dream plucked right off the tree and in F150 Flareside form. Loaded in and out with custom touches including faux carbon fiber, ground effects, a hood, paint work, wheels, exhaust and a bed cover, this truck shows that one can take the mundane and create a show winner and traffic stopper. Read on and soak in the sun of all the custom cues applied to this rig right out of 2003.
The hits start with a dip in the deep end of the pool Hugger Orange for the aerodynamic body matching bumper with some aero venting and inset fog lights. Just above is a chrome surround for the custom black horizontal bar grille and flush mount aerodynamic headlights. A custom dual nostril scooped and bulged hood is finished with painted black sport striping and leads back to the raked black trimmed windshield. Hugger Orange bathes the entirety of the steel body along with the custom side fairings with a black step running board, and the black insert step side insert on the bed, this is just the start of something special! The special comes in the form of painted gray shades of checkering with highlighting that lick down the sides of the body and are highlighted below by chrome rub strips. Tinted glass is encased in black trimmings and there is plenty of black accenting throughout to compliment the Hugger Orange paint which is fantastic. Another body matching bumper on back with neatly surfaced black step pad on top give way to the 1994/95 Mustang style ribbed orange tail lights. More black striping for the tailgate completes the look with the help of a black canvas custom bed cover. Under this cover is the used but not abused Hugger Orange steel bed. This skate rides on 20-inch Prime wheels which are cast aluminum and highly polished 7 spoke wheels. These wheels are wrapped in 255/50ZR20's on front and back. Now orange you glad you took the time to read this?
A swing of the doors and the hits just keep on coming! Perfectly molded dark slate gray plastic forms to the contours of the various armrests, speaker housings and some lower stowage bins. An orange carbon fiber insert is on as an accent and serves as the housing for the power windows and locks and side view mirror joystick. Slipping inside and peering upfront the dash is all orange carbon fiber fronting which was carefully molded to the instrument cluster, ac venting and other controls. In the dash center is a large oval carbon fiber encasement which has more inserted venting, temp dials, and an AM/FM/CD digital radio. All this is surrounded by a near perfect slate gray padded dash top and passenger glove box. Fronting this custom dash is an orange and black steering wheel with several push button controls inserted. Turning to the seats, we note black leather buckets with built in headrests, and some tuck and roll inserts. Orange piping and some orange in the bolsters finishes off the seats. Noted in the center is a fold down armrest which when up provides another seat for an additional passenger. Let's call it a 70/30 split bucket bench. Gray carpeting floods the floors and above is a gray fuzzy broadcloth headliner with an additional overhead console with some additional displays, and 2 storage bins. Squeezably soft and interesting!
Upon lifting the custom scooped hood we are met with a 5.4 Liter Triton V8 shoehorned into the engine bay. Some orange dress up has been added along with some freehand pinstriping on the radiator cover. On back to make this truck move forward, is a 4R70W 4-speed automatic transmission which throws power rearward to a Dana 60 3.55 limited slip rear axle. Juicy!
Slight surface rust is noted on the frame and clean and structurally sound body hangers support the extra fairings on the sides. Stamped steel provides the floor pans and an inboard of the frame fuel tank is seen. Independent coil springs with radius arms provide the ride for the front, and leaf springs bring up the rear and a lowering kit has been installed to give that just right stance. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners and a dual exhaust system with the mufflers deleted provide the whoa factor as well as a zesty roar.
This truck fired up and off to the test track where it was a fun driver. Plenty of power from the SOHC 5.4 Liter, a smooth shifter, and nice handling for a pickup. The interior was very comfy, and all was functioning perfectly during the test drive.
