1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS

1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS

The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared in Chevrolet dealerships in September 1966 for the 1967 model year on a brand-new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door, 2+2 seat, hardtop (no "B" or center pillar) or convertible, with the choice of either a straight-six or V8 engine. The first-generation Camaro was built through the 1969 model year.

This 67 as we can see, had undergone a restoration with some changes to the original configuration but still sporting the all important 4P accessory code on the Fisher body tag. The body and frame have been kept OEM but a color change was performed along with a slight downgrade to the powerplant from original. Nonetheless, this example has been kept in a heated garage and never seen rain during our consignor's ownership tenure, (since 2017), and comes with many extra factory parts including the A/C compressor and condenser.

Exterior
A metallic orange respray with basecoat and clearcoat give this 1st year 1st generation Camaro some extra zest, and it shines like a crazy diamond. Very nice paint with only a few minor inclusions and imperfections but nothing truly noteworthy on this well-done steel body. This car also carries the RS package, consisting of hidden headlights and RS specific taillight bezels (the all-important Z22 RPO code). A reverse scooped cowl induction hood has been added for a little extra pizazz and the rocker chrome, and wheel well surround trim is excellent as are the crossed flag 350 fender badges. Small bumpers are also excellent and grace the front and rear of the car. On all 4 corners are 15" deep dish rally wheels wrapped by black sidewall tires, correct for the period but updated. We also need to mention the small but sexy front and rear spoilers, the front hovering below the bumper and the rear floating above the trunk (actually it's attached).

Interior
I'm breaking protocol and starting with the trunk which you have to see to believe. All wrapped in green and black houndstooth vinyl it displays neatly. Now we can move to the meat and potatoes of the interior…the passenger compartment. Swinging the doors, we are greeted with excellence. Excellent door panels in black highlighted by chrome strips, vertical stitching and square embossments look just fab. Turning our attention inward we are greeted by a....wait for it...factory bench seat...yes, not only is this split bench seat a rarity to see but this car was assembled this way. Smooth black vinyl bolsters highlight the tuck and roll inserts on this seat and a centrally located armrest can be folded up to provide room for a 3rd passenger if need be. In the back is a fixed position bench in matching material which looks to hardly have been used. All of this floats above clean black carpeting with a Hurst shifter growing from the hump in the front. As we move to the dash there are 3 aftermarket gauges hanging below the dash, these monitor oil psi, volts, and water temp. Moving up the angled inward dash in black, there are a few chromed knobs and dual deep dish round gauges framed by an original steering wheel, all just in peachy condition, actually it's all black. Noted on the original steering column is a tachometer so you can avoid the red zone. A tight headliner with a working dome lamp hangs above and we have covered the interior.

Drivetrain
Lifting the reverse scooped hood we are met with a well restored engine bay holding in its confines a silver painted 1967 327ci V8, (casting number 3892657 and stamping code T0301ME), which is not original to this car. An Edelbrock intake manifold and Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor are on to handle the air and fossil intake. Dressing up this powerful V8 are chrome valve coverings and a chrome air cleaner assembly. Bolted to the back of this mill is a non-original Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission and handling the power at the tail end is a 12-bolt conventional rear axle with 3.31 gearing.

Undercarriage
Underneath we are met with black as far as the eye can see. We note only minor surface rust and some road dirt on the suspension components which come in independent coil spring form for the front and a leaf spring configuration for the rear, the correct factory add-on passenger side traction bar is also noted. Front disc brakes, rear drums, and a dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers are seen all in good condition.

Drive-Ability
Lights quickly, and just listening to the exhaust sound of the idle, you know you are in for a ride. This car does not disappoint, as it runs like a deer, stings like a bee, and handles like a butterfly, all while looking great and turning heads. It has to be a female car, because it can do more than one thing at once…but I digress, and back to the wonderful handling, ride, and acceleration. She is just a great driver whose power goes on longer than our test area and our only frown was the headlight doors not opening on their own. And the color…like Old Blue Eyes said "Orange is the happiest color"

A generation 1 first year pony car, completely restored, with an RS option package, SS350 package, as well as some great rarely seen factory options. All surfaces interior and exterior are good to go, and in good working condition and in all its upgraded restored glory, we have a really nice first year Camaro on our hands. All working, all nicely attended to, and all muscle. Orange you glad you read my entire ramblings!
