1985 Saxon Austin Healey 3000 MKIII Replica

1985 Saxon Austin Healey 3000 MKIII Replica

The Austin-Healey 3000 is a British sports car built from 1959 to 1967. It is the best known of the "big Healey" models. The car's bodywork was made by Jensen Motors and the vehicles were assembled at BMC's MG Works in Abingdon, alongside the corporation's MG models. During its production life, the car changed from an open sports car, albeit with a child-transporting 2 plus 2 option, to a sports convertible. In 1963, 91.5 percent of all Austin-Healey 3000 cars were exported: mostly to North America. The 3-litre 3000 was a highly successful car, which won its class in many European rallies in its heyday and is still raced in classic car competitions by enthusiasts today. British Motor Corporation ended manufacture in 1967, intending its place to be filled by a car with a new, though similar, engine in a more recently designed monocoque MGB variant named MGC.

The lovely little Austin-Healey, or the big Healey in this case, is a car with universal appeal. It has stylish and quirky lines, wrapped around a basic chassis with a thundering little six-cylinder engine with rear-drive. It's the basic small British sports car formula executed to perfection, and an instant classic. But what that means for would-be Healey buyers, is that you'll have to fork over considerably more money for one than, say, a Triumph Spitfire or an MG A roadster. In fact, it'll take around $55,000 to get yourself into a decent Healey 3000, with the majority selling between $60,000 and $80,000. But that's not even the limit, as rarer examples will fetch over $100,000. Now that's probably not quite what you had in mind for your small (affordable) British sports car. Consider then, this big Healey replica, it was manufactured by a company called Saxon, and it looks very much the part. In fact, I'd imagine that this car would keep an entry-level enthusiast fooled, even through the interior.

Exterior
This long-hooded chrome trimmed scooped oval grilled car is spot on leading the way for this fiberglass replica and spit spot on the build with a beautiful black finish, beautiful chrome, and a tan canvas drop top. This top presents with a few tears, but a new top is included with the purchase. Tastefully curved fenders with a single round headlight with chrome bezel, and a top trim piece for the fiberglass front fenders. The rear, albeit small, has a nice sloping down curve to complete the car. Window trimmings are all excellent, fender mounted mirrors are looking good for looking back and a nifty set of 14-inch ARE wheels in a polished and natural finish are on each corner.

Interior
While the interior diverts from the original Healey's form quite a bit and really, it looks like a pretty comfortable place to spend the day, and surely accurate enough to fool most. Inside 2 tan leather covered bomber style rounded low back buckets flank the center red carpet covered hump. These are nicely aged with no tears, just a few creases that come with well-aged leather. Upfront a padded topped wood dash houses the obligatory Autometer gauges with their nice chrome bezels along with a Vintage AC & heat controller and power ports in front of the passenger. More red for the carpeted storage area behind the front seats. Red carpet floods the floors under the seats, and a shout out to the tan door panels also looking smashing. This entire interior is decidedly British if I must say so mate!

Drivetrain
As I flip the bonnet, I would expect to see an inline 4-cylinder but instead I am met with a 2.8 Liter Ford V6. This engine is finished in Ford blue and is fed its fuel and air via a rebuilt 2bbl carburetor. A Ford 4-speed manual transmission is on back and feeds power to a General Motors rear axle. Cracking if I must say so meself.

Undercarriage
Underneath has all been painted black for the square tube frame and floor pans as well as the rockers. Independent coil spring front suspension is on, and we note 3 link with coil spring suspension with new shocks in the rear. New low profile exhaust with glasspack style mufflers snakes its way to the rear. Disc Brakes are upfront, and drums for the boot, and we are ready for a tool.

Drive-Ability
This car started immediately, and after a brief warmup, it was motoring off to the test track. With great handling, acceleration, quick shifting, and bias free braking, I felt like Nigel Mansell gliding her through Maggots and Becketts and imagining the old RAF arriving and leaving for their sorties. I just love British sports cars, and this replica is a 5-star version.

Fully built, ready to be enjoyed, all looking chipper, and running like a pocket watch…a must see here in our Classic Mall halls. Well done mate!
