1966 Ford Galaxie 500 LTD Fastback

1966 Ford Galaxie LTD Fastback

Back in 1958, Chevrolet took the automobile market by storm with its flagship passenger car, the Impala. The full-size Chevy was a rage in the late 50s. The launch proved to be a masterstroke that took all of Chevrolet's competitors by surprise. Among other top automobile brands back in the day was Ford. With a reputation of producing some impressive vehicles in the 1950s, all eyes were now on Ford. Their response to Chevrolet Impala? A full-sized car, targeted at a similar crop of buyers. Labeled as the Ford Galaxie, the full-sized car remained in production from 1959 to 1974. The name was a marketing gig inspired by the 20th century "Space Race" between cold war rivals, the USSR, and the US. While the Galaxie series was a massive success, the year 1966 stood out in terms of production and sales numbers.

This beautiful Galaxie 500 LTD Fastback has been treated to a consignor stated frame off restoration by a veteran as part of his PTSD recovery project recommended by his counselor. Nice lines, acceptable gaps, some blacked out chrome, a rebuilt engine and a new transmission. A nice example of a Ford classic that you can literally get in, turn the key and start the party.

Exterior
Dark Green Metallic adorns the exterior and displays with some bubbling, chip offs, orange peel and cracking of the bodywork. The gaps maintain an acceptable form with the exception of the hood which is notably higher on the driver's side. Some brite work shows pitting in particular on the headlight bezels, however they appear original to this car. Bumpers and most of the chrome trim, which have been blacked out with a satin finish, are straight but present with some pitting and add an allure of mystique to the overall body design. The grille has also been blacked out and has a section of the lower panel missing. The leading edge trim is missing across the hood and both front fenders as well. All glass is clean and scratch free. Highly chromed American Racing Torque Thrust wheels in 15" format are wrapped by staggered width Cooper blackwall tires.

Interior
Going from the ground up, new black carpet covers all floor surfaces. The late model charcoal vinyl bucket seats in front are showing nicely with no tears or rips and have maintained their shape with ample bolsters and extra padding. The rear bench appears in very good condition with only minor wrinkling of the material on the upper cushion. A shifter has been relocated from the column to the floor and is a B&M unit with an obligatory T-handle. The factory black steel dash with its long sweeping speedometer is shielded under a padded topper that shows with some waviness and a few cracks. Door panels appear original and in very good condition with heavily padded tuck and roll vinyl and clean black carpeting. Some chrome for the window cranks and door releases gives a nice offset to the sea of black. Peering up the headliner has been removed and now we see a bare roof covered with just silver sound deadening material. Seen are aftermarket gauges hanging below the dash, and an empty hole where the factory radio used to reside.

Drivetrain
A rebuilt 390ci V8 is topped by a new Holley 4-barrel carburetor and bolted to a new TCI C6 3-speed automatic transmission that shifts smooth as silk. A conventional Ford 9" rear axle with 3.00 gearing handles the ponies and turns the tires. A new radiator has been added to help keep things nice and cool.

Undercarriage
Looking underneath, a virtually rust free (only minor surface rust) environment can be seen. Frame is very stable as are the junction of the body and the frame. Also, a newly installed dual exhaust system with cast iron headers and Flowmaster mufflers is noted. Disc brakes have been added on the front and work with an independent coil spring arrangement and on the rear, we see drum brakes and a 4 link with coil spring assembly.

Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and on the test track did a nice job. It has wonderfully smooth acceleration, bias free panic stopping, and good handling for this very heavy car. All functions were working during our test drive and the melodious tune of the exhaust more than makes up for the lack of a radio.

An overall nice presentation with a few faults, good running, smooth shifting, turnkey '66 ready for more fun miles, right here at Classic Auto Mall. Solid!
