2006 Chrysler 300 SRT8

2006 Chrysler 300 SRT8

The 300 debuted as a concept at the 2003 New York International Auto Show with styling by Ralph Gilles and production starting in January 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Chrysler 300 was designed as a modern interpretation of the 1955 Chrysler C-300 (and the letter series Chryslers that followed), featuring a large grille, long hood and low roofline that was prominent on those vehicles. The styling retained many elements of the 1998 Chrysler Chronos concept car, such as chrome interior accents and tortoiseshell finishing on the steering wheel and shifter knob. It was the last Chrysler vehicle designed under Tom Gale, upon his retirement from DaimlerChrysler in December 2000. It shares a name plate with the 1957 300C letter series coupe and convertible.
Its bold lines and big V8 make it clear that the 300C was designed for the American market. There is no mistaking this car for anything out of Germany or Japan (though, admittedly, some like to call it Bentley Lite). I'm glad we have some exciting domestic cars again—especially in sedan form. Now here this!!! The 300 nameplate is back in a badass way with this as close to new as you can get 7,539 original mile 2006 SRT version of the 300. A translation of SRT to the layperson is 425hp of 6.1 Liter Hemi V8 tire shredding ass kicking horsepower all wrapped up in an unassuming sedan body.

Exterior
Bathed in its original deep coating of Bright Silver Metallic nary a flaw can be found. Starting with the very European style neoprene front bumper with its eggcrate grille and outboard one-piece headlamp assemblies we see smooth design that was used across the Chrysler model lineup this year. Overall chiseled lines make up the body and moving down the long slab sides the only variation from the all silver theme is a black and chrome 300 C badge on either front fender and a thing chrome highlighted rub strip on the mid beltline to protect from errant dings. Wrapping up the tail end are body integrated taillights, a spacious felt lined trunk and another neoprene bumper with cutouts for the dual exhaust to exit. Factory 20" multispoke wheels adorn all 4 corners and are wrapped in the original low profile blackwall rubber. A factory power sunroof is on top of the big flat roof and gives you the option of some extra sunlight and fresh air on your tours.

Interior
Swinging open the door and we are met with a dark charcoal and a stone hued panel. A chrome strip adds an air of class to the door as does the thickly padded armrest. Power window, power lock and power mirror controls are held within as are one of the many speakers. This theme of colors also appears on the long deep dash with a litany of gauges being in front of the leather wrapped steering wheel that contains not only the neo-classic Chrysler emblem but also audio controls. An AM/FM/Multi CD/MP3 player with Navigation is in the center of the dash as are the heater and A/C controls while just above this we note a white-faced analog clock. Power and heated front bucket seats are shod in smooth charcoal black leather bolsters and deeper black suede inserts flank a central console which contains the shifter and multiple storage compartments. A long bench in the rear stretches door to door and is of the same design as the buckets. Black carpet floods the floor and looks showroom new while a gray headliner hangs above and has a factory installed power sunroof.

Drivetrain
Lifting the striped hood we see a true powerhouse of this sedan. The factory 6.1L HEMI is between the inner fenders. This elephant sized mill is capable of producing 425hp thanks to the precise EFI system. Bolted to the back of this elephant is a Mercedes-Benz derived beefed up W5A580 5-speed automatic transmission and 3.07 geared rear axle puts all this power to the pavement with the help of a limited slip unit.

Undercarriage
Showroom new is the best way to describe the bottom of this car. Suspension is independent on both front and back and 4-wheel Brembo power disc brakes bring all the horses to a stop. Dual exhaust feed spent fossils to the rear after passing through the factory catalytic converters and mufflers. All buttoned up and looking great.

Drive-Ability
It was time to draw straws to see who got the chance to drive this Euro snot killer. Somehow my partner in crime and all around good guy managed to snag the keys whilst I was oogling over some of the British 2 seaters that have recently graced our Hallowed Halls. A twist of the key and the HEMI roared to life. Slipping the shifter into D we were off to the Classic Auto Mall Test Track. Here the car had limitless acceleration, beyond stellar braking, and handling like that of a European sports sedan. We returned with all smiles and my cohort in the driver's seat had an ear-to-ear smile thanks to all the power from the mighty elephant up front.

Chrysler brought the name back with a bang for the 2006 model year. A true homage to the original letter cars but with some help from the folks at SRT to eclipse the horsepower numbers of yore. This is most likely the closest thing you can get to a brand-new car right out of 06 and it's presently in our hallowed West Mallway and ready to teach those Bimmer boyz and Mercedes elitists what a REAL sport sedan can do.
