1967 Mercury Cougar Resto Mod

1967 Mercury Cougar

Not exactly hot on the heels of Ford Division's extremely successful Mustang, was the 1967 Cougar. Actually, the decision to go ahead and build Mercury's version of the Mustang was made in February of 1965. The Cougar was envisioned to be a more elegant, high line Pony car that would exude a bit more class and yet still encompass the qualities that made the Mustang so popular--a smaller sporty sedan that would handle well and still be economical enough for the younger customer.

For consignment…a restomod version of the Cougar right out of 1967. Fully murdered out in sinister black, a big block V8, upgraded suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes and custom touches galore. It's time to grab this untamed kitty by the tail and enjoy the 1967 Motortrend Car of The Year.

Exterior
The Cougar is quite different from the Mustang in the realm of styling. Most noticeable was the front end "electric shaver" split Grille treatment with concealed headlights and this particular car has upgraded electric actuation and LED lighting that leads to the reverse scooped hood. At the rear, it came with T-Bird sequential taillights. These taillights have had their sequencers removed but still shine brightly. Deep end of the pool sinister midnight black covers the panels which show some usage, inclusion and cracks, particularly at the molded in rear quarter caps but all else is straight and smooth. All chrome and brightwork has been fully blacked out and the door handles have been shaved. Dual exhaust with blacked out tips peek out the back at the bottom of the chassis. Black with polished lip 17 and 18-inch Ridler wheels give this cat sure footing along with staggered size and width blackwall radial rubber. A shout out to the trunk with its plaid finished mat and relocated battery. Meow!!

Interior
Swinging one of the two doors open, we are met with more black in the form of lowback bomber style buckets with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters. A rear bench, providing room for 3, fills the rear of the cabin and all of the seating appears as new. This car does not sport the XR-7 package so we see the standard clean black padded dash giving way for a black steel lower section and twin round gauge pods in front of the driver. These gauges are some of the few deviations from the all black theme with their silver faces and red pointers. An aftermarket tachometer sits to the left just above the slides for the heater/defroster controls and to the right are a series of warning lights. A late model General Motors steering column fronts the dash and gives us the much appreciated tilt feature. In the center of the dash are ducting outlets and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD player and just below are a trio of white-faced gauges. Medium loop black carpet floods the floors and hanging above is a tight black headliner. Finishing off the interior tour are black vinyl door panels with a vertically stitched center and bright chrome for the door actuators and window cranks. These panels present in good shape but do show some wrinkling of the material, especially around the edges.

Drivetrain
Under the scooped hood is the roaring heart and soul of this Cougar. A rebuilt and bored .030 blue painted 460ci V8 now resides between the fenders and with ported C9VE-A heads, its growl is heard for miles. This big mill is topped with an aluminum intake manifold and a Holley 750cfm 4bbl carburetor. Keeping things well dressed are polished and ribbed valve covers along with a matching air cleaner assembly. A 3-speed automatic C6 transmission sends power rearward through a 31 spline Ford 8.8” 3.73 TracLoc pumpkin to boil the hides.

Undercarriage
All solid underneath with miles of black painted steel and undercoating. A solid and clean unibody with subframe connectors provides the backbone for the DMJ independent coil spring front suspension and power rack and pinion steering while in the back we see leaf springs on for the ride. Power disc brakes are noted on all 4 corners, and we see a custom dual exhaust system with Cherrybomb mufflers. All these parts work together to keep this big cat sure footed through all the curves.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and very smooth runner with acceleration aplenty just push foot further to floor. Bias free braking thanks to the 4-wheel discs, and good handling make this a luxury muscle car much more upscale than the Mustang, and more powerful especially with that big block up front. Our drive garnished quite a few looks and thumbs up and I enjoyed myself so much with this fully functional Merc that I took a second lap just so I could draw in the excitement again.
Restomods are hot these days and this car hits every mark properly. All blacked out and straight as an arrow, this Mercury was well thought out during its build and assembly. Much more luxurious than a Mustang, and in this iteration much more powerful to boot. Visit our Hallowed Halls and keep an eye out for the sign of the cat...this one's ready to bite any challengers.
