1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396

1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396

Like the Tri-Five Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle is one of those cars GM aced right out of the gate and continued to perfect. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines which ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defines the muscle car era.

Over the past few years, we've certainly seen some nice Chevelle SS396's come through our Hallowed Halls. This example will have you singing the blues as it is all buttoned up with a rebuilt engine, new clutch, rebuilt suspension and carpet. It is sporting a 396ci V8 and has a Quadrajet to feed it copious amounts of gas. The paint is good, and the interior has been refreshed. Turn the key and make some smoke and noise and impress your Chevy friends and make your Ford enemies frown!

Exterior
As we gaze into the Marina blue metal covered exterior our eyes skim past some uneven gaps, new perfect trimmings in chrome and stainless, especially the new front bumper, door handles, new correct badges, dual headlights, a bumped hood with new louvers, and clear spot free windows. The sheet metal and paint present with some inclusions, inconsistent application, and evidence of body filler seen on all of the lower body panels. That aside, I love the back design of this car with its flying buttress B pillars framing the rear glass and melting into the trunk lid with wrap around rear quarter taillights, and SS and 396 badging with a horizontal black band just above the bumper, emphasizing the “wide trac” look. A redo of the 14-inch deep dish rally wheels which now have shiny beauty rings rings and centers, all wrapped in blackwall radial rubber finishes off the combination well.

Interior
Swing the black vinyl covered door frame open to the interior, and what do you now have? The interior! Yes, it's snappy, yes, it's sexy, yes, it's like new with its smooth low back black vinyl buckets trimmed with chromed edging. Give the back of the car permission to place a bench that stretches from side to side for some extra passengers to enjoy your driving, and mimic the buckets, and you are in…1967 heaven. Racing through the buckets is a black vinyl molded center console complete with a Hurst shifter. This console, ending upfront and looking at that original dash with black padded top overhanging a black strip of appliqué that runs underneath from door top door. Directly in the midst of this level in front of the driver is the original instrument cluster level. The Panasonic AM/FM radio is in the center and button for the passenger glove box in front of the passenger seat all finished with a faux wood look. Then level 4 where we note a large black metal painted panel with 5 rows of controls from vent to outlets to heat to defrost to fan speed to just plain fresh air. Then the basement if you will with a hanging trio of volts, oil pressure and water temp aftermarket gauges.…bring on the oohs and aaaaahs! Also note a factory steering wheel, in good condition with its chrome horn ring. New black carpet in clean condition floods these floors and above a nicely tightened black vinyl headliner is all good.

Drivetrain
Underneath the dual vented, chrome louvered hood is a period-correct but not original, rebuilt 396ci V8. Well done and complete with orange painted block, an aluminum intake manifold, a new 4-barrel Quadrajet carb atop, and chrome dress ups for the valve covers and air cleaner assembly. On the back is a non-original Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission sporting a new clutch disc and in the way back is a 12-bolt rear that has 3.31 posi gears. This engine bay has just recently been repainted and detailed, and it looks just fab!

Undercarriage
Very well preserved and restored with nicely painted black frame and flooring with only minor surface rust peeking through. Our consignor states that new full floors have been installed along with new trunk panels. Power drum brakes are on all 4 corners, and we note new motor mounts as well as a new transmission mount. For the front suspension, an independent coil spring is the style with new control arms and coil springs and on the rear is a 4 link with new coil springs. Dual exhaust leads down from the bottom of the leak free engine and snakes it's way rearward with a pair of Flowmaster mufflers on board.

Drive-Ability
Started right up and ran like a 1967 Chevelle SS396ci V8 4 bbl should. Good braking, smooth shifting, and decent cornering, it can get a little happy on the back if you get too goosey with the boot. A few frowns were noted on our drive, the horn didn't blow, the wipers didn't wipe, the heater blower didn't blow, the radio wouldn't belt out any tunes on either the AM or FM band, and the brake lights didn't light up upon deceleration.

Overall, a nice example of the Chevelle in SS396 trim with a few mechanical and cosmetic frowns but still a wicked fast driver. A like new interior along with redone flooring and trunk, new suspension components and a rebuilt big block V8. Now occupying our East Mallway and ready to run circles around your competition.
