1969 Ford Torino GT

1969 Ford Torino GT

The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), considered "the Italian Detroit". The Torino was initially an upscale variation of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane, which Ford produced between 1962 and 1970.

For consignment, a Torino from 1969 in GT trim. Plenty of work has been performed on this car with a new carburetor, Pertronix distributor, rebuilt power steering unit, and a mild cam installed in the consignor stated original engine. It adds more muscle to an already buff version of the luxury muscle car.

Exterior
With mostly straight steel panels bathed in a respray of the original Royal Maroon, decently minded gaps are seen throughout between these panels. Some invasive rust and evidence of bodywork is noted in the lower rear quarter panels and lower passenger door. Up front a clean egg crate style grille holds the quad headlights and trim bar. This grille is surrounded with nice stainless molding and presents with the requisite GT badging on the lower left. A nice sporty blacked out hood with a Cobra Jet style hood scoop leads back to a clean windshield with excellent brite-work. Meanwhile clean black vinyl covers the roof and adds an air of distinction to this muscle hardtop. Bringing up the rear are a pair of squared off tail lights flanking an egg crate filler panel with another GT emblem and a clean shiny bumper below. Standard 14 inch styled steel wheels with GT badged cap in the center and a deep trim ring surrounding all wrapped in white raised letter radials.

Interior
Wonderful late 1960's black for the seats, door panels and steering column. Black tuck and roll cloth for the inserts and smooth black bolsters for this interior with the front split bench and the rear bench (couch) appear to be seat covers but we did not investigate further. Some chrome trimmings are thrown on the sides just for extra accenting too. Slightly faded black carpeting floods the floors and allows for a nice background for the seats. The door panels get into the act as well with a central tuck and roll panel with smooth black vinyl surrounds housing the window crank, Grand Touring badge and armrest/door pull. Upfront a multi circle molded dash houses all the instrumentation. This circle pattern is all padded black vinyl and has the original gauges within these 4 deep set surrounds. Below is a horizontal bar which holds an AM/FM/Cassette player, various knobs and pulls, and aftermarket gauges. Fronting the dash is the original steering wheel sitting proudly atop the factory column with its attached shifter. Just a fab presentation with black and chrome for this seldom seen model.

Drivetrain
Under the hood a 302ci V-8 with an added mild camshaft and topped by a new in 2020 Holley 4-barrel carburetor, a Pertronix distributor and new blue Ford Racing spark plug wires, this engine has been tuned for maximum performance. All backed by a 3-speed C4 automatic transmission and a Ford 9-inch 2.79 conventional rear axle. All looking good and ready to rumble.

Undercarriage
Up on the lift we see a mostly original undercarriage with a mix of patina, surface rust, factory undercoating and black paint. All solid and ready for years of service. Drum brakes and a fully rebuilt in 2020 power steering system are noted as well as independent coil spring front suspension and leaf spring rear. Lastly, headers and Flowmaster mufflers are also seen underneath which expel spent fossils out the rear of the car.

Drive-Ability
Slipping inside I took this one out for a long cruise and it was a great experience. There is plenty of power which goes and goes to the point where I was wondering where it all came from…then I remembered all the upgrades this consigner did, and every little bit helped with overall performance. Also, a good tuner in your corner does not hurt! All was working well, and the car ran great with all functions working as they should with the exception of the odometer.

A clean well-kept car with a few frowns but our consignor did a great job with keeping this car mostly original and right. Fresh out of 1969, this car is currently deciding to be a muscle car or an upper end luxury cruiser. I have an idea, why not be both?...because it can be. Put that in your pipe and smoke the tires
