History
When introduced, at the 1964 World's Fair, the Ford Mustang began the era of the “pony car”. Named not for its title “Mustang” but for ushering in a class of American Muscle cars, that were affordable sporty coupes with long hoods, and short rear decks. Wildly popular, the Mustang design flew off the showroom floors. Even today current models make use of the running horse emblem, that has stayed with the car for 55 years.
This 1966 289CI V-8 Ford Mustang in Emberglow paint scheme, has a rare pony interior option. The car is very much original and has the beginnings of what would be a very nice example of a typical paint and interior combination vehicle restoration. A vinyl top that is in very good condition shows a cream color, which matches accents within the interior seating inserts, and door panels. Most surfaces throughout show a beautiful patina that only a nicely maintained and stored vehicle could obtain with age.
Exterior
Matched to original Emberglow repaint with cream pinstriping on exterior door panels, has aged well. Some signs of wear show on hood and trunk, and minor bubbling can be seen at the bottoms of the passenger doors. Overall, chrome is in very good condition, and all exterior lighting is functional. Front grille is original and shows very little wear. All badging is original and attached in correct placements. A cream vinyl top is very good condition, and very clean. Original Ford spoked wheel covers are present on all (4) 14” wheels. 14” thin white sidewall tires have slight wear. Some paint bubbling is evident where the body meets the frame.
Interior
Emberglow and Cream bucket seating, and a bench rear seat show signs of wear. The original “Pony Option” is present with bevel stamped galloping horse motif on a dark brown vinyl insert to each seat. Gauges are original, and the odometer shows 132,862 miles but are non-actual. A rallye steering wheel, and AM radio are present and appear to be original to the car. Complimentary Emberglow carpeting throughout, has slight areas of wear, but retains color saturation. A cream-colored vinyl headliner in very good condition frames the interior roof. Interestingly, the trunk has the original plaid vinyl trunk liner and spare cover.
Drivetrain
This Mustang sports a 289CI V-8 normally aspirated engine is rated at 200HP and is in original condition. A 3-speed automatic transmission, manual drum brakes, power steering, and 14” wheels complete the drivetrain. Front and rear suspension show independent springs which were standard for the model year. The underside of the car shows some oiling on the floorboards
