1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Z28 is the most famous Chevrolet RPO (regular production option) code ever. No other option code has become so synonymous with high performance. Other option codes have been used for well-known packages such as Z22 (Rally Sport) and Z27 (Super Sport), but the option names/descriptions became famous, not the RPO number. It has also been said that 2 doors and 8 cylinders, but this could be a coincidence because 28 was the next code in line!

For consignment a 1984 version of the Chevrolet Camaro Z28. This car has a mostly original black paint job with some areas of respray. This year has a snazzy T top, greenhouse rear glass, dual inset rectangular headlights, and an inset sculpted hood. With some recent maintenance work, slight performance upgrades and multiple show wins for Best Stock class there is still a lot of gas to burn through on this baby, so let's go search out a Mustang to have for lunch!

Exterior
Wearing the majority of its original black paint which is set off nicely with gold accenting that encircles the entire lower body we note some hazing of the paint, road rash and the beginnings of invasive rust in the rear of the driver's door jamb. A black grille built into the neoprene front bumper is flanked by quad headlamps that are shrouded by the long lean hood. The rear raked in spoiler is also black and frames the iconic rectangular grid tail/signal/and backup lights which wrap around to the rear quarters. Note the T tops which do not leak and are fashioned out of smoked shatterproof glass. Speaking of glass, there's plenty more for the wrap-around greenhouse rear glass which serves as a “hatchback” if you will and works its way to the trunk. Chrome Keystone Klassic wheels are wrapped in like new rubber and adorn the 4 corners. A shout out to the rear hatch area with its added speakers and black Fisher T-top bag.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we see angled striped tan and black striped broadcloth for the uppers, and tan carpeting for the lowers. All black molded plastic for the door actuator, armrest, power lock and power mirror toggles. Moving inside, nice clean tan broadcloth centers with more of the tan and black striped bolsters cover the high back buckets in front and a 2 plus 2 rear bench offers up some room for 2 more. A black topped center console is on the hump, and this rises to the original dash also in black. Clean tan carpeting floods the floors and is protected by black rubber Bowtie mats. Everywhere else save for the glass T top is covered in black vinyl or plastic which has been expertly molded to create a litany of interior shapes pleasing to the eye and touch. The original 3 spoke steering wheel fronts the factory gauge cluster complete with a tachometer and multitude of gauges to monitor engine function. An AM/FM Sirius capable stereo has been added in the stock location.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 305ci HO V8 that is topped with a rebuilt 4bbl carburetor. On back is a 700R4 4-speed automatic with a shift kit installed and the rear tires takes the power from this mill via a 10-bolt 3.08 gear rear. All surfaces are clean and show some nice patina overall, but no rust or corrosion.

Undercarriage
Fairly clean floor tubs which are stamped steel are solid and rust free. A heavier coating of surface rust has managed to roost on the suspension parts and rear axle, but these are all structurally sound and fully operational. We can note independent front coil spring suspension with new struts, and a torque arm with coil springs for the rear. Also, power disc brakes are upfront, and power drums for the rear. Exhaust is clean and is a stock style installation.

Drive-Ability
Just a great driver, lumbers a bit around corners when pushed, but all in all a real performer. Good solid braking, and all functions were working during my drive but I did hear a slight exhaust leak which our consignor states is coming from an emissions tube and the passengers window will continue up beyond it's stop . It turned more than a few heads too!

A good example, nicely maintained, retaining much of its originality and appearing ready to sneak up to a Mustang and say BOO!
