1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS Convertible

1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS Convertible

The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared in Chevrolet dealerships in September 1966 for the 1967 model year. Based on a brand-new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door, 2+2 seat, hardtop (no "B" or center pillar) or convertible, with the choice of either a straight-six or V8 engine. The first-generation Camaro was built through the 1969 model year.

The RS was an appearance package that included hidden headlights, revised tail lights with back-up lights under the rear bumper, RS badging, and exterior bright trim. Purchased by our consignor in 1989 and taken apart for restoration in 2004, come 2006 this example was ready for the road with new GM fenders, lower quarters, a rebuilt original drivetrain, mostly original interior, and with the RS package shows very nicely, and goes pretty good too.

Exterior
Repainted in the original Bolero Red and looking just fine, this Camaro is also sporting a black canvas top and is in good condition with no tears and a plastic fog free rear window. The power function has been disabled and now the top moves up and down manually. A glance down the side reveals well minded gaps and no signs of rust or corrosion. The RS option hidden headlights are functioning, as well as all exterior lighting. 14" Chevrolet rally wheels are framed by Goodrich radial T/A blackwall rubber. The RS gas cap is planted firmly in the center of the rear panel and the correct white nose stripe is on wrapping around the nose of the car over the grille.

Interior
Inside, black vinyl with some stitching, thin chrome accenting and all in pristine black vinyl make up the door panels. Black vinyl low back bomber style bucket seats, grace the in interior and based on overall wear may be the originals . Also, a matching motif bench seat in the rear makes up the seating arrangement. A center console shows an automatic shift handle that is designed right out of the 60's. (Looks like George Jetson would have used a similar one to control his flying car!). This console races between the buckets before ending just under the dash at a trio of aftermarket gauges. Airflow and temperature for the interior are controlled by horizontal levers in the middle of the dash. Deep round angled analog gauges create the gauge cluster in front of the original 3 spoke RS steering wheel. Black medium pile carpet covers the floors and shows a few areas of color fading but is otherwise clean.

Drivetrain
A date code correct and consignor stated original 327ci V8 drinks from a 4-barrel carburetor and drives the original 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Both the engine and transmission were rebuilt during the 2 year restoration. On the way back is a 10 bolt rear axle.

Undercarriage
Underneath we are met with black as far as the eye can see. We note only minor surface rust on the suspension components which come in independent coil spring form for the front and a leaf spring configuration for the rear with an added rear sway bar. Power front disc brakes, rear power drums, and a dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers are seen all in good condition.

Drive-Ability
A good driver, quick starter, smooth shifter, and some good grabby brakes. The car rode smoothly, and the interior was spacious. It's great to be able to put a top down on a nice day and go for a spin so I can write about these fascinating cars!

A generation 1 first year pony car, completely restored, with an RS option package, as well as some great factory options. All surfaces interior and exterior are good to go, and in good working condition. Noteworthy is that the original drivetrain is present and was rebuilt during the 2 year restoration. A check back in time reveals that all advertising money went into the SS. Hence a beautiful option...the RS…was somewhat ignored, creating a lesser seen Camaro but seen right here at Classic Auto Mall.
