1942 Oldsmobile Series 76 Dynamic Cruiser

1942 Oldsmobile Series 76 Dynamic Cruiser

IT'S QUALITY – BUILT TO LAST
The nation's oldest motor car manufacturer has been serving the needs of the American public dependably, year after year, since 1897. Now, to help keep working America on the move and to serve an increased need for efficient, dependable, economical transportation, Oldsmobile offers the "B-44." It's a heavy, husky Oldsmobile, geared in design to the tempo of modern living, built to give years and years of dependable service, capable of fine performance, yet economical in its use of gasoline and oil. So advanced in style that it will keep its youth for years, so advanced in engineering that it incorporates everything that is new and modern, the "B-44" is better looking, better lasting, and better built than any Oldsmobile in 44 years. —From the 1942 Dealer ads.

For consignment, purchased by a Pennsylvania couple to drive back and forth to their Jersey Shore house an Oldsmobile Series 76 Dynamic Cruiser. Featuring the hydramatic transmission you'll be saying Look ma no clutch! This car presents in fair condition, is bathed in black paint and has a mohair interior that both will need some TLC. It runs great and is mechanically sound and has the original engine which is unrestored.

Exterior
Steel panels bathed in black are showing their age with peel off, some rust and various rub off of paint on all surfaces. Chrome trimmings and badging as well as handles have early signs of rust and pitting. Aerodynamics is king on the shape of this car from its bulbous front pontoon like fenders to the swooping rear deck and fenders on back shaped to meet up with the back. The window panels in the roof are even aerodynamic with nicely rounded trimmings on their edges. It appears as though this car is moving when in reality it's just sitting there! A large 2 tier front bumper frames the grille, showing some rust on the upper horizontal bar. The large protuberant hood rises from the grille and has a nifty art deco hood ornament on top. Either side of the hood we can see the Hydramatic chromed rocket like trimmings which add highlight to the hood. The rear fenders have a small square taillight on either side and the rear bumper appears in good condition. 15-inch red painted wheels have ribbed trim rings in chrome on their edges and a moon cap in the center of the red field. These are all wrapped in wide whitewall tires.

Interior
With the uppers of the door sills and interior window surrounds we see faux painted burl wood grain. Just below begins a field of tan fuzzy broadcloth in tan. Within these panels are the cranks and handles which remain shiny and retain their nicely aged bakelite knobs. A black vinyl armrest and door lower is seen as well. These panels show some water damage and creasing in the padding. Inside we see a full metal jacket dash with a cream top which cascades down to the dash front which is more faux burl painted surfaces. Within this delineation between the top and faux painting, are nice elongated oval bezels which have within them the instruments in front of the driver, and a clock in front of the passenger. In the center is a wonderful vertical ribbed speaker frame and below a radio with push buttons and knobs that have a great cream bakelite finish. Looking just like an old radio you would sit around and listen to War of the Worlds. A wonderful large bakelite steering wheel with a cream wheel that surrounds a chromed horn ring and more bakelite in the center with a red O L D S M O B I L E badge in its center. The front bench is covered in a red tan and cream checked seat covering and the consignor states it's been on since a few years after the car was purchased, but we did not take it off to verify. In back we can see somewhat as the front would look like as it presents in a striped broadcloth which utilizes light and dark tan and has large arms on either side. This bench is in good condition save for a hole and water staining on the passenger's side bolster. Brown carpeting floods the floors and is in fair condition, and the headliner has some water damage, but consignor has a new one that will come with the car.

Drivetrain
Under the large hood is an unrestored engine bay, and surface rusted 238ci I-6 cylinder engine. It is fed by a 1-barrel carburetor and has the star of this year's show, the 4-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission. On the back is a 3.63 rear axle. This is all in a 6-volt electrical system.

Undercarriage
Here we can see plenty of surface rust throughout, particularly in the back of the undercarriage. Frame and floor pans remain solid; they too have surface rust and plenty of patina. Body hangers and small running boards are still solid. As is the X frame. The fuel tank appears newer and has no rust. Coil springs are all around and in front they work with independent suspension and on back trailing arms. Drum braking is all around. A newer stock style muffler is seen.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up and ran like a champ. Good braking, smooth Hydramatic shifting and a smooth ride. I guess that's why it's called a cruiser!

This wonderfully designed early 40's example is the perfect car to go on a long cruise. It has seen some rough times for the aging department, particularly in the exterior, however with some TLC, you will have one fine 76 Dynamic Cruiser!
