1970 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

1970 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

Zora Arkus-Duntov (December 25, 1909 – April 21, 1996) was a Belgian-born American engineer whose work on the Chevrolet Corvette earned him the nickname "Father of the Corvette." He is sometimes erroneously referred to as the inventor of the Corvette, whereas that title belongs to Harley Earl. He was also a successful racing driver, taking class victories in 1954 and 1955 24 Heures du Mans.

For consignment, a fully restored 1970 Stingray “Sugar Scoop” version of the classic Corvette. Almost showroom looking, a blue over blue vinyl version with 84K original miles. Very nice and straight immaculate fiberglass and chrome, better than when it left the assembly line. Couple in a meticulous binder of photos of part numbers, the original tank sticker, multiple show wins and part of the Blue Display at Carlisle. We have a winner that will never leave you feeling blue.

Exterior
Redone in the original Mulsanne Blue in near perfect condition, a very nicely done respray covers the exterior. A few minor faults, but it will truly take a keen eye to spot them, chrome bumpers, and all britework are like new. The sides of the front quarters are curved air venting with a Stingray badge. A sugar scooped LT-1 hood is on and gives the right performance look to the undulating body. Egg-crate grills and squared front directional lamps are noted and correct for this year working in tandem with the hidden headlights. A nice removable T top set in matching Mulsanne Blue sits within a chromed framework with supple rubber seals. On back are the quad of round taillights and the split rear accenting bumper in chrome. Just below are the chrome tipped exhaust pipes that fit perfectly within the cutouts in the rear valance. 15 inch deep dish rally wheels are on all 4 corners, and are wrapped by raised white letter BF Goodrich T/A radials.

Interior
Two showroom condition Bright Blue vinyl buckets sit within a sea of blue carpeting, which has two “Corvette” crossed flag logo vinyl floor mats. The center console and ascending panel which works its way to the dash houses several gauges, the shift lever, and an OE looking digital radio. Some wood appliqué, and plenty of gauges all are extremely clean. An armrest which is located just aft of the parking brake handle fits snugly between the buckets. The dash is showroom, and a note to attention to detail on the restoration the vent levers which flank the shifter have near perfect lettering on them. A large blue storage area backing the seats is presenting very clean and carpeting is in very good condition here.

Drivetrain
A CTJ code for this engine denotes it is a 350ci 350hp engine with a Quadrajet single 4-barrel carburetor atop. AC is bolted on and most important of all is that it is numbers matching. Our consignor even went so far as to photo document part numbers and casting dates for the cylinder heads, intake manifold, carburetor, starter, and water pump. Attached to the rear of this is a numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. The rear axle weighs in with 3.55 gears and Positraction. Noted is the total absence of any corrosion on cast aluminum parts, and the pristine condition of the engine itself as is the fully restored engine bay. A few points to note: the radiator has been recored, the alternator was rebuilt, and a Mallory electronic ignition distributor was added but the original distributor is included.

Undercarriage
The frame, floor pans, and suspension with only the untreated pieces having just the beginnings of surface rust, all else is painted and detailed nicely. A dry underside with virtually no drips or faults can be viewed with the car on a lift. No problems to report here! Disc brakes are on all 4 corners and rear C3 Vette suspension is on. As per our consignor the rear trailing arms were redone by Van Steel.

Drive-Ability
This writer just adores these early 70's Corvettes and I had to take this one out. It fired right up, and the test track proved to be a great drive with fast acceleration, great handling and bias free panic stopping. All functions were working well with the exception of the A/C, which our consignor says needs some work, the odometer didn't click off miles, and the volt gauge flutters. It is a comfortable cruiser too!

If you are just bursting for blue, you should be inclined to take a look at our Mulsanne Blue, well documented restored 70 'Vette. Very rarely do we see a car from this year in this condition. All numbers matching drivetrain, and interior is mostly blemish free, and appears showroom new. Visit us at Classic Auto Mall and have a sit in this classic, you will not be disappointed. In fact if you don't visit, you may end up in a blue funk.
