1952 Chevrolet 3/4-Ton Pickup

1952 Chevrolet 3/4 Ton Pickup

During the 1950s, Chevrolet introduced V-8 engines to its trucks, but the vehicle more or less continued as an updated model of the early postwar pickups that debuted in 1948. This was a completely new truck. Chevrolet gave the truck better weight distribution by increasing the load capacity of the front axle, adding about 5.6 inches to the front and moving the front axle back about 2 inches. Engineers enlarged the cab for better comfort and added more windshield and rear window glass to increase visibility.

For consignment, a 1952 Chevrolet 3/4 ton pickup now with a stake bodied bed, fully restored cab exterior and it was an original 1 ton, but with suspension and axle changes it is now in the 3/4 ton range. Bathed in PPG single stage Delstar, it has a GMC front clip, and a 350ci crate motor. Let's go haul something! (Ass possibly?!?)

Exterior
Starting life as a dump truck and a 4400 series truck, it has now been upgraded to a stake bodied 3/4 ton hauler. With the cab removed and sandblasted and at this time any rusted metal was replaced, then the truck was re-assembled with a new coat of PPG single stage Delstar paint which shows as shiny bronze. A 1952 front clip courtesy GMC is nicely polished, and a black painted bumper is below. Nice lines with the bulging upward hood which rounds off showing a low-profile hood scoop in its center, as it makes its way back to the split windshield. Nicely rounded fenders skirt either side of the hood and these house a single round headlight with a smaller round turn signal below. The cab is topped with some big rig features including a dual air horn setup as well as some orange exterior cab lights. Hanging off the sides of the doors are large rear-view mirrors that offer excellent fields of view past the stake body sided bed. This flatbed has an all new structure as well as wood stake sides. The wood is a stained pine and is held together with structural steel rod stock and bolted onto the wood. The sides have two heights which are interchangeable and the back back which is a 70/30 split panel setup is also stackable. The bed is steel and shows some wear and dirt but no rust. On the back there is a large bumper and center attachment for some HD pulling with dual chain clips. The back bumper is painted black but has some scratching and minor rust of those scratches from simple use. There is also a square hole in this panel for a hitch, as well as an electrical hookup. Wheels are now 8 lug Ford 16 inch and are wrapped in 7.50R16 tires. 2 additional spares and wheels are in the back bed. Stake sides and a flatbed adds versatility as to what you can haul, so load 'em up!

Interior
Opening the doors with the body matching handle utilitarian wafts heavily in the visual air. A black vinyl panel is on the door uppers and bronze painted steel is the lowers. Some wear is noted, and the armrest has been wrapped in electrical tape. The passenger door is slightly less worn and is sans armrest or electrical tape. Seating for two is provided by Jaguar tan leather which show some wear with slight cracking but the seats are power adjustable, and overstuffed. A wood center console with opening for cups can double as a 3rd passenger seat as there is a center padded back that rises from the wood and fits between the buckets. The floors are covered in rubber and the original rounded full metal jacket dash sports a newer cluster of instruments in a single circular gauge on the left, and an original speed on the right. Fronting the dash is a large steering wheel. Simple but effective with a hanging lighter plug in small fan.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is now a 350ci crate engine which the consignor states puts out 290hp. It is topped with a single 4-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed manual transmission is on back. This pushes power to a now improved 3/4 ton single axle rear from a late 1980's Ford pickup.

Undercarriage
With a virtually newer rear bed and structure, the frame is solid throughout. We see heavy duty leaf sprung suspension, and drum brakes on all 4's. A dual Cherrybomb exhaust is installed.

Drive-Ability
She fires right up with a roar, and off I went shifting my to the test track. Here it did well with lots-o-power, a truck ride, and smooth shifting. The steering wheel seems to have some excess play, and the consignor states when the truck is loaded the front-end lifts just a bit. Since there are no heads of cattle here at Classic Auto Mall, we did not load it up to see if this is true so we will take his word for it!

A true work truck classic in work truck condition, and a new 350ci engine. Jag leather seats, and some new instrumentation, big rig air horns and cab lights, and 8 lug 16-inch wheels, some beefed up suspension, and this truck is now a 3/4 ton workhorse. Giddyup!
