1964 Chevrolet C20 Pickup

1964 Chevrolet C20 Pickup

Although pickups came of age after World War II, they continued to evoke a postwar sensibility until Chevy introduced a groundbreaking generation of trucks in 1960. Not only were these C/K pickups - a designation that is still in unofficial use - equipped with the segment's first independent front suspension, but also a new drop-center X-shaped frame that reduced the height of the vehicle by up to seven inches. The lower stance was emphasized by an attractive, pinched-waist body marred only by a fussy front end featuring "jet pod" eyebrows over the grille. Over time, the hoodline was lowered and the front fascia simplified, and by the end of the model run in 1966, the pickup was an exemplar of restrained elegance.

For consignment, an older nut and bolt restoration and slightly pumped up 1964 Chevrolet C20 pickup. A newer clutch and bathed in a beautiful yellow, slightly customized dash, and snappy interior, along with a beautiful bed. Sporting all its original metal except for the rear roll pan and bed front this is truly ripe for the picking fruit here at the Classic Auto Mall when it comes to the pickup trucks we have in house.

Exterior
For 1964 the Jet Pod eyebrows are now gone, and the hood now is simplified yet still upstanding with turn signals, and dual intake vents. Just below is the original restored to perfection single headlight chromed egg crate grille bordered below by a black bumper. Moving back, we note all straight steel for the body and bed panels, along with a wrap over tail stripe in vinyl, and all side trim removed. Gaps are well minded, chrome trimmings are nicely redone, and the window trimmings have been nicely blackened which contrast to the yellow. Inside the bed we see more flawless yellow paint and a bed floor lined with oak and highly polished dividers. The rear of this truck has taken on some fab fabrication with some shaving of the rear bumper then an insertion of a smooth lower roll pan, as it really pulls itself off well, and adds a modern twist. Nice 16 inch semi polished 8 lug aluminum wheels are all around and certainly add some curb”apeel”(Sic) along with the blackwall BF Goodrich 265/60R16 rubber.

Interior
A swing of the double hulled door reveals a yellow central steel panel which houses the cranks and door handle and is surrounded one the tops and bottoms gloss black metal. A smooth black bolstered vinyl bench seat with yellow tuck and roll insets sprawls from door to door and is looking showroom new. A slightly custom dash in black painted steel is fronted by the original steering wheel and contains the original black faced white letter gauges along with a Sunpro tachometer and Pontiac vacuum gauge. Moving down the line we see original knobs and pulls, original heater and temp levers, and an aftermarket AM/FM radio. Black carpet floods the floors and is fairly clean and above is a really snappy ribbed metal roof in more gloss black. Tra La La, Tra La La La La…(trivia?)

Drivetrain
Underneath the hood within the yellow and black engine bay is a consignor-stated original 292ci inline 6 cylinder that was rebuilt by Gettie Machine Shop. Twin 1 bbl carburetors send fuel and air into the engine through an Offenhauser intake manifold. A 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive sends power back to the 3.73 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Well done underneath with a sturdy frame and clean black undercoated floor pans. In front we see independent coil spring suspension, and on the rear is trailing arm and coil sprung suspension. Power drum brakes are all around, and a header feeds exhaust gasses out via a pair of Turbo style mufflers.

Drive-Ability
A super quick starter, and nice runner, for a pickup it loved our test track almost as much as I loved driving it. Very comfy ride, nice sound, good handling, and snappy acceleration. Also, a quick stopper with those power drum brakes. We did notice 2 frowns on our test drive, the turn signals were not functioning, and the heater blower also did not operate.

Get that monkey off your back and get down to the hallowed halls of the Classic Auto Mall and feast your eyes on this mellow yellow example from 1964. Do it quickly as these well-done pickups tend to slip out of here fast. A head turner that is definitely as described being built to drive not to be looked at, but in my opinion, excels at both.
