Chevrolet designer Clare MacKichan recalled about creating the Chevy II: "There was no time for experimentation or doodling around with new ideas from either the engineers or from us in design; And it had to be a basic-type car." "I think that was the quickest program we ever did at any time," he continued. "We worked night and day on that car, and it didn't take very long to run it through our shop because we had a deadline." And that's what made the Chevy II one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM history – just 18 months after the designers got the green light, the first production Chevy II rolled off the Willow Run, Michigan, assembly line in August 1961, in time for its September 29 introduction. Unlike the Corvair, the 1962 Chevy II was deliberately never intended to be revolutionary in concept or execution; its mission was to give Chevrolet buyers a simple, back-to-the-basics compact car. When he announced the Chevy II to the press, Chevrolet General Manager Ed Cole described the car as offering "maximum functionalism with thrift."

Minimalistic with maximum function, thrift, not revolutionary in concept or execution, a compact grocery getter, pick the kids up kinda car. That may be what the GM designers had in mind but our consignor had other plans and he raised the bar on every level of this build. However, this does not detract from its charm, and important place in Chevrolet history fulfilling a need for the masses. Enjoy the 1967 Chevy II sedan!

Exterior
Painted in a beautiful maroon, straight steel panels, great trim, and chrome, and shiny American Racing rims are seen on this very muscular looking simple but elegant grocery getter. Tinted windows are framed by blackout out trim, and this blacked out chrome follows along to the mirror, wipers and door handles. I would not go so far as to say frame off, however it truly is a restoration that was meticulously performed.
Interior
A redux retaining its original door panels in black vinyl and some shiny chrome for the window crank and door handle greet us nicely. Slipping inside, the dash upfront has had a new padded dash top recovered in black vinyl. The instrument cluster has been redone with a silver painted panel housing a multitude of AutoMeter gauges. This updated cluster is fronted by a 3 spoke black rimmed Grant steering wheel perched atop the factory column. A newer aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM/CD player is fitted within the original panel and below a modern heat and A/C controller has been installed. In the middle of the hump is a Hurst shifter, and this fronts recovered tuck and roll seats with smooth vinyl bolsters in bucket form. The back uses the same material as well and matches the front in black. A tight black headliner is above and shows a few spots of staining. Black stain free carpet floods the floors and is protected by Chevy II floor mats.

Drivetrain
A consignor stated 383ci V8 is now resting comfortably in the engine bay. This engine has aluminum cylinder heads and intake manifold along with a 4bbl carburetor on top. It has a reddish orange painted block, and a pair of black 383 Stroker emblazoned valve covers, and open style air cleaner cover with polished highlights sits atop of this all. A TKO600 5-speed manual transmission pushes power rearward to a 10-bolt rear.

Undercarriage
Down below we are met with black undercoated floor pans, unibody and suspension. Subframe connectors have been added for additional chassis stiffness. A Heidts Mustang II front suspension has been added with disc brakes and a leaf spring with traction bars and drum brake setup is on the rear. Headers send spent gasses to the rear of the car via a pair of Flowmaster mufflers.

Drive-Ability
This car starts easily, and drives well, with good acceleration, smooth idling, and a nice cruise at speed on the highway. Braking is solid, and the exhaust has a nice tone to it. Needless to say, it handled our test track with ease, but we did notice that occasionally the car won't shut off and has to be stalled out with the clutch pedal.

Restored to an owner's desires, not necessarily to become an exact original version. It has been pieced together nicely and all parts work together splendidly. A now fun grocery getter, eye catcher, and remnant of 1967 in spirit, but many upgrades put together to hand out some stop light whoopins
