1969 Chevrolet Camaro Yenko Clone

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Yenko Clone

To Ford fans, Carroll Shelby is the high-priest of performance. Chevy loyalists revere a Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, car dealer named Don Yenko. Yenko had a deserved reputation for driving, building, and selling dominating Chevrolets, starting in '65 with well-crafted super Corvairs. He advanced to installing 427ci Corvette V-8s in '67 and '68 Camaros, performing 118 of the transplants. These $4,200 ponies ran in the low 13's right off his shop floor.

And quite as rare, and not nearly as valuable as the original but this one has some superpower under the hood…a consigner stated 454ci V8 with lots of goodies much like the original. You can even drive this one every day as it can sit in traffic and God forbid if something happens just get it fixed. All wrapped up and looking amazingly just like the original, and could easily be mistaken for one.

Exterior
With this unassuming original Camaro look, you may pass it right by, however upon closer inspection, that Tuxedo Black in beautiful condition, miles deep and buffed to perfection, sports some correct Yenko stickers in the form of a Yenko Diamond on the front of the hood, and dual racing stripes going to the windshield, ending in a cowl induction hood over top of a 4-barrel carb directly underneath. Also, a black side spear sticker, starting at the front quarter, and racing rearward widens at the rear quarter with more Yenko badging, ending upward framing a rear spoiler. A beautiful black vinyl top is on and has nice chromed trimmings surrounding the glass. Chrome bumpers are excellent, dual pipes peek out from under the rear, and on all 4 corners are 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels. A note to the grille which is egg crate style which is just fab. Also, one slight difference from the original is the presence of a trio of black and chrome vertical fake vents in front of each rear wheel well.

Interior
Fully restored, it is hard to find any fault on this interior. Nice black door panels have shiny cranks and a nifty rectangular Camaro badge in the center. Beautiful buckets sporting the SYC logo on the headrests, draped in black vinyl and a houndstooth black and white broadcloth float in a sea of unmarked nice black carpet. Racing between the bucket seats is a pristine black console with an automatic shifter poking its wand out to select the gears and a heads up quad display of gauges to monitor various vehicle and engine functions. A simple dash hangs with rosewood veneer overlays is above said console and sports a 140mph speedometer and heater controls. A fairly tight headliner hangs above and displays well.

Drivetrain
A consigner stated 454 cubes resides under the reverse scooped hood. The transmission is a TH350 3-speed manual. On the rear is a 12-bolt rear axle. A well restored engine bay that without close examination could easily be mistaken for a Yenko original.

Undercarriage
Stunningly clean and beautiful underneath with jet black frame and floor pans rust free suspension, and like new dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. Independent coil springs suspension for the front, and leaf springs for the rear. Power disc brakes are up front, and power drums are on the rear.

Drive-Ability
My crack decoder and I drew straws to get behind the wheel of this big time muscle clone and I won as usual. Sliding behind the rosewood steering wheel and allowing the houndstooth cloth to caress my posterior I was in muscle car heaven. This car is a handful for sure but in a smile inducing way. The car accelerated at a breakneck pace and stopped nicely. All functions were working properly at the time of our drive.
A very well-done clone of a Yenko Camaro with the added bonus of an automatic transmission so daily driving isn't out of the question. You better hurry up and make your move and this one won't last long and will soon be adorning another muscle car lover's garage. Oh Santa, I'd like to amend my wishlist.
