1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe

1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe

The use of words such as “Special” “Deluxe” “Custom” “Special Deluxe” “Custom Deluxe” hit an all time high in the 1940's with every other manufacturer using these descriptive monikers for the naming of their car. Some of these were associated with trim levels, others were the actual name of the car, denoting overall quality. Even though there were many thousands of examples of each model in the public domain, the individual owner was led to the premise that they were literally the only one driving this model of car!

For consignment, a 1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe 2 door sedan that has been beautified and rodded. A chopped top, PS, PB, AC, and heat and remote door locks and aqua over bone (ivory)...I think I'm in love!

Exterior
This example is what happens when you start with a beautiful design and play a bit to make it even better. Chop the top 3 inches, french the lights on the body, shave the unnecessary badges and all that other extra weight, then drench the roof in aqua paint, and the rest of the car in bone ivory, including the bumpers, and you now have an example of the 41 bowtie that looks better than when it rolled off the factory floor. Rounded lines are accentuated tastefully by pin-striping in aqua and magenta that run the length of the car and stop in the middle of the door seam to play with each other in a flourish. The door handles have also been frenched, the front end lowered and some large zoom pipes in chrome glory stick out from the rear bottom below the painted bumper. The front bulbous fenders frame 14-inch American Racing Torque Thrust polished wheels with extra-large knockoff hubs, and on the back we go up a notch with 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust polished wheels with knockoffs. Quite the Chattanooga Choo Choo coming down the tracks right at you and your garage.

Interior
As we swing the doors the modding and rodding plays on like a Glen Miller band with a total custom leather interior. A one and a two…and we start with ivory leather custom door panels that feature some padding on the sills and upper window surrounds, embossing for the main panels which feature a lazy curving armrest and billet handles. Light gold carpeting covers the lowers and all the floors. Floating in the interior are wonderful modern leather high back buckets in front, and an equally as county two seater rear bench with a center armrest. Plenty of legroom for these passengers and lots of the gold carpeting to rub their toes into while being whisked in total style down the road. I can grab the wood rimmed 4 metal spoked Lecarra rally wheel and peer into the dash which has been modified to have a central simple ivory painted panel with a lineup of white faced VDO gauges with classic letters and numbers in black and a black pointer. Vintage Air and heat are in, and some machined billet pulls operate various functions. Racing through the buckets is a custom leather wrapped console featuring a padded armrest and a vertically mounted stereo, and above is a fuzzy broadcloth ivory colored headliner which is nice and tight.

Drivetrain
A 350ci Chevrolet motor now is shoehorned into the engine bay, and it has a Comp cam installed. On top is a 4-barrel carb, and on back a recently installed 200R4 4 speed automatic tranny. Final drive cozies up as a 10-bolt 3.08 posi axle.

Undercarriage
Solid steel all rust free sprayed in black, and all buttoned up sums it up underneath. Dual Cherrybomb exhaust runs from the mill to the rear zoom chromed tubes. Along the way they pass independent coil springs in the front and leaf springs on the rear. Also, they go by power Wilwood front disc braking and power drums in the rear.

Drive-Ability
Like slipping into the past when entering this rad rod. All leather and you can breathe it in. A quick starter and after a warm up it ran like the wind. Excellent acceleration, solid braking and really tight handling were the norms on this test drive. All functions were working like it was built yesterday.

The 1940's were a great era for the manufacturers and the designers really stepped it up a notch. Running boards were disappearing and machining was looking much like it was done on an english wheel. This two-tone special deluxe, with snazzy body mods, a powerful engine and a leather interior is ready to beat the band. Get in, sit down, shut up and HOLD ON!!
