1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

With its wind-swept design and classic good looks, the Chevrolet Coupe series has always been a rare and highly desirable line of cars. Not surprisingly, gear heads, customizers and all but 80 years' worth of dedicated fans have elevated it to one of hot rodding's greatest cultural icons.

Custom built, this 1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe street rod is truly masterful in every way. A very well-built piece in the grand old-school tradition, it maintains a stock appearance with just the right exterior touches to suggest there is more at work here than meets the eye, and it does not disappoint.

Exterior
This Chevy's rounded sheet metal was expertly prepared for the car's highly polished teal base coat , then clear coat finish, which is highlighted with all excellent chrome and brightwork. The curved V styled horizontal ribbed front grille is lanked by large fender mounted bullet style headlights and is very representative of the design of this car. In these prewar years, fenders were still king with the running board attaching them, but they were beginning to integrate into the body shell. On the rear we see 2 long thin vertical taillights courtesy of a Cadillac, are frenched into the smooth nearly fender-less and definitely bumper-less rear trunk area. Chromed bent upward exhaust tips are looking upward slightly from under the rear roll pan. Beautiful 14 inch chrome KMC front wheels are wrapped by 225/60-R14 front tires and the 15 inch KMC rear wheels are wrapped by 245/60-R15's. From its cloisonné shield style radiator badge grille to the snazzy chrome tips on the rear this car is a shining example of the 39 bowtie Master Deluxe.

Interior
Pontiac provides the front buckets, and these are shown nicely in light gray tweed bolsters, and darker gray tweed tuck and roll inserts. On the outer sides of these chairs are custom door panels also making use of the dark and light tweed, and the original cranks and knobs are within this tweed field. In back is a similar pattern and color bench seat stretching from side to side. Fronting what is a custom dash, is a tilt column topped with a rally style Lecarra steering wheel covered in textured leather. This turns the front wheels with power steering. In back is a brushed aluminum panel that has a peppering of black face gauges with white numbers and red pointers. These gauges are bezel-less and are frenched into the panel. The remainder of the dash is painted dark gray and the speaker grille in the center has become another brushed aluminum panel. On the floors, which have very nice gray carpeting is a B&M shifter and a vertically mounted AM/FM/CD radio. Other creature comforts include electric wipers, A/C, and heat. A shout out to the headliner which is one of the more interesting ones you'll see as it has an outer border of light gray tweed, and an inner panel that has been embossed and is covered in darker gray. Heads up!

Drivetrain
A 454ci big block Chevy V8 with aluminum heads has a 4-barrel Holley feeding it and a Pete Jackson gear drive. A TH400 3 speed automatic is on back along with a 1980 Lincoln 9-inch 3.00 Trac-Loc rear axle. A Walker radiator with twin fans keeps the big block cool, and to aid with the exhale are dual exhaust with headers.

Undercarriage
Looking underneath, we see an absolute and total restoration with jet black suspension, teal steel for the floor pans and rockers, and a plethora of patina or several surfaces. A nice job under here. Mustang II provides the front end and new leaf spring rear suspensions are seen as well as 4-wheel power disc brakes for a quick stop.

Drive-Ability
Just a pleasure to drive as it started immediately, and ran like it was going out of style, this car steers smoothly, shifts easily, and gives me a big car ride feel, even though all the while I'm inside a 2 door. All functions are working swimmingly.

As close to near perfection as we dare go, this Master Deluxe is truly standing by its name, masterfully restored, and deluxe in its fit, finish and power...Master Deluxe with a smile he says.
