1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

The third generation of “America's Sports Car,” known casually as C3, was rolled out for the 1968 model year. The Corvette was all new for 1968, and a little thicker around the middle. At 3065 pounds, the new convertible was a full 300 pounds heavier than the original '53, but only 50 pounds up on the '67.

For consignment, a 4-owner car originating from Texas and spending most of its time in the salt free south this car sports a consignor-stated ZZ430 engine, has new Autometer gauges, later C3 seats, and a fully restored interior. This fun, throttle, wind in your hair 'Vette is a looker and a cooker!

Exterior
Clean crack free fiberglass is now bathed in Dupont Hot Hues Red. Chrome peppers this hot Red in the front bumper and dual grille surrounds window trimming for the front windshield, and split rear bumper. Hooker stainless steel side pipes are on, and the rockers also sport a small trimming highlighting just above the side pipes. Just behind the seats is a Shark bar roll hoop that allows the top to still cover the compartment, and shoulder harnesses glide smoothly inside these. Due to the car recently residing in South Carolina the canvas convertible top is not installed, although the framework will come with the car. Also noted is an LT1 hood on this hidden headlight car. 17-inch Boyd Coddington wheels shine brightly on all 4 corners.

Interior
Peppered with Al Knock and Corvette America, as well as Autometer gauges, the interior has been fully restored. An Ididit steering wheel and column is now fronting the dash which features white faced Autometer gauges. These also show up in the central dash cluster. Just below this cluster is an Alpine AM/FM/CD digital radio. Below this a seamless transition for the central console which houses the temp sliders, and shift lever. Vintage Air is installed and as noted later black leather covered buckets are in and looking great. Black carpeting is covering the floors, and the top is completely hidden in a rear pop-up trunk deck lid when in the down position. As a bonus the original bucket seats are included.

Drivetrain
Under the LT1 hood is a consignor stated ZZ430 crate engine. It has a single 4-barrel carburetor on top and the factory Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission on back. Power transfers to the rear tires via a 3.70 posi rear axle. This engine features a Street and Performance serpentine belt and pulley system with a chromed A/C compressor, alternator and steering pump.

Undercarriage
Underneath looks good with no rust and some extras added on for better handling. These include Steroids rack and pinion steering, Performance Plus front and rear transverse leaf sprung suspension, and power disc braking on all 4 corners which have like new calipers and rotors. Hooker stainless side pipes grab the exhale from the Hooker headers.

Drive-Ability
This car fired up with a nice roar from the side piping, and off to the test track I went. Here it handled really well, had snappy acceleration and good bias free panic stopping. Note the canvas is not on the top but the frame is there, the headlights turn on, but they did not open up, and the A/C needs a recharge along with a dryer and solenoid. Also, the wipers are inop.

The C3 design is one of this writer's favs in the Corvette lineup and this one appears and performs the part. Side pipes, new interior, and a powerful engine, how can you go wrong?
