1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe

In 1938 The Chevrolet Motor company offered an upscale version of the Master, (AKA the HB), and The Master Deluxe, (AKA the HA), sedan. This was a popular car selling over 302,000 units, so a lot of examples survive. First popular with hot rodders because of the availability of parts, and the ease of replacing the engine, many versions and interpretations survive today.

This all steel, (save for the running boards), example of the 1938 HA sedan has had many modifications from the original to create a unique vehicle, while maintaining the original overall shape by Harley Earl. An interesting color combo, along with smooth wide fenders, and a new interior I give you the car badged as “Street-rod” in HA sedan form.

Exterior
Using Dodge Neon purple for the uppers and honeycomb looking bowtie pattern on the sides which melts into GM Geo Super White for the bottom and running boards this car has the look of bowtie love. A horizontal ribbed V curved front grille is now showing in purple. Rounded fenders and side mounted headlights go bumper less for the front. Also, side cowls have been left off so you can view the snappy looking mill under the purple hood. On the back more rounded fenders flank the humpback trunk which has taillights on stalks and is also bumper-less with the rear roll pan rounded over to match the backs of the rear fenders. Running boards are fiberglass and have a subtle purple bow tie at the entryway of each door. Chromed exhaust tips peek out from underneath the bumper less back and just as shiny ate the American Racing Torque Thrust wheels.

Interior
The purple bowtie colorway theme continues with a pop of the doors; on the door panels we see purple bowtie armrest and sills along with a large field of white vinyl. Scanning the inside we see two tone leather bolsters in tan, and cloth inserts in purple. Slipping inside we greet gray late model broadcloth seats in high back bucket form with dark gray plastic tub surrounds and purple seat belts. Upfront a custom dash using white with purple accenting. Black face gauges are spread throughout the driver's side dash and these float in a field of machined aluminum. Nice gray carpeting covers the floors and in bak a gray bench in tuck and roll broadcloth stretches from side to side. A light gray headliner is noted and several amenities are now in such as Vintage A/C, a LeCarra Tilt wheel, power windows and door locks although there is no fob to work the locks. Above, inserted in a small box mounted to the headliner is a Pioneer AM/FM/CD player.

Drivetrain
350 cubes of V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor sits within the open cowl front end. It has some extra bling with chromed air cleaner cover and valve covers. Purple wiring is on and black headers that the spent gasses quickly out. A TH350 3-speed automatic is on back and a 10-bolt rear axle spins the rear tires.

Undercarriage
Mustang 2 provides the front end with A-arms and coil overs. Rear suspension is coil over adjustable shocks and leaf springs. 4-wheel disc braking is now installed. Also noted are T bar bumpers for the front and bolt on brackets hidden underneath to protect the rear.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter and very smooth operator. Good solid handling and snappy acceleration have this vehicle not only looking good but its fast as well. As noted, the power locks are there but no FOB is available to make them function.

A meticulously planned out car in a way that every part was made to be sure to be the best it could be for this build. The car sounds great, and runs and shifts smoothly, and is comfortable to sit in to boot! A turnkey Hot Rod with Harley Earl lines right out of 1938. Purple never looked so delicious.
