1991 GMC Syclone

1991 GMC Syclone

The GMC Syclone is a high-performance version of the GMC Sonoma pickup truck. Produced in 1991 by GMC along with Production Automotive Services (PAS) - the same company credited with building the famed 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am, the GMC Syclone was the quickest production truck to be produced in 1991. Following the Syclone's production, the similarly powered 1992-1993 GMC Typhoon SUV was based on the GMC Jimmy platform.

There is an impending storm in our hallowed halls here at Classic Auto Mall in that we have a super low mileage, (7,442 actual), example off the low production from 1991 GMC Syclone. It's in beautiful condition, it's fast and it will blow away any competition you can throw at it! Found in a purchased storage unit in Maryland, our consigner gave it a bath, got it titled, and did a full once over for the mechanicals.

Exterior
Sporting a few extra fairings on all 4 corners this menacing truck is draped in all black. Gaps are well minded, and all steel is rust free and straight just like it dropped off the line at the factory. From front to back is has a very “aero” look with integrated bumpers also in black, and extra moldings at the bottom. Red badging is tastefully gracing various panels and adds to the mystique of speed. The bed is covered with a snap on black vinyl topper, and this covers a bed that is in full metal jacket and looks like it never hauled anything! On all 4 corners are Cyclone-esque wheels wrapped in like new rubber dated from 1990, so they are original tires from the factory. My knee is hurting so there must be a low-pressure system forming and it will strike when the accelerator is pushed.

Interior
A swing of the doors and more factory/showroom condition piles cover the doors. It makes use of satin aluminum for the actuator and power window/lock panel, has intermittent panels of black carpeting which have red piping as the delineation, and then molded gray and black plastic to complete the armrest and storage tray at the bottoms. Seating is pristine black broadcloth with more red piping accenting the front buckets, in high back form with integrated headrests embroidered with red Cyclone badges. A central console races through these buckets and heads towards the dash, housing a glovebox and the shifter on the way. As for the dash, it's the early 90's so we are still in the square and rectangle genre and this dash is a fine, a very clean example of that design. Behind the original steering wheel is a gaggle of round instrumentation with colorful graphics in a black field. To drivers right is the AM/FM/Cassette radio and temp sliders. Black carpeting floods the floors and the headliner is excellent above in black.

Drivetrain
A lift of the hood and we see the money shot, in the form of a well preserved non corroded surfaced 4.3 liter Turbocharged V6. This mill is fed by EFI and has a 4L60E 4-speed automatic on the back. This throws all that turbo power rearward to a 10-bolt 3.42 positraction rear axle. All looking low mileage and showroom under this hood.

Undercarriage
Save for a slight bit of spotty surface rust from sitting all the time, we are solid underneath. Consignor has put a new fuel tank on and cleaned the fuel lines out. Rockers are near perfect not even showing any road dirt. Power disc brakes cover the front and power drums for the back. Independent coil sprung front suspension, and leaf springs keep the rubber to the road on this impending storm.

Drive-Ability
She fired right up and seemed to run very rough even after a warm up. It did get around the test track well with good handling and bias free panic stopping, however we could not realize its full potential due to the rough idle and miss we experienced.

Imagine buying a storage unit and finding this piece within it! Yup, that's the story and now for sale to you in low mileage form and not unlike other famous big storms, this one will need a name. Go ahead make my day!
