1941 Willys 441

1941 Willys Coupe

The 1941-1942 Willys Americar was an ordinary but well-built compact passenger car produced under the presidency of Joseph W. Frazer, (later of Kaiser-Frazer) and engineered by Barney Roos. The L-head four-cylinder engine and ladder chassis were conventional, while the sharp-nosed body styling owed a little to previous Hudsons and Nashes.

Straying from its original design, but still in keeping with the theme, we have a hot-rodded version with an all steel body and chassis. Put in a massive 520ci Donovan Chevrolet big block engine with a dyno proved 1,013.5 HP, some snazzy customizing for the interior up to date with the latest and you will be the belle of the hot rod drive in ball, AND no one will mess with you! Over 1000 horses, now that's some serious power!

Exterior
This all-steel body is all in very nice condition, and is all dipped in Brandywine Red. A big shiny hood scoop is on to accommodate the dual quads and supercharger and feed it plenty of forced air. The teardrop style headlights are nicely inset into the fenders and the pointy, now fiberglass, (Consigner has metal hood too!) the hood is flanked on the lower part of it by a rectangular shaped vertical toothed grille. The front bumper is still there framing the bottom just above the asphalt. These shiny parts are now all stainless steel. The back of this car has a beautiful line as it forms the split oval rear window and curvaceous trunk line. Inside those massive exaggerated but still tastefully shaped fenders are 15-inch front and rear polished knockoff hub wheels that appear to have been just dipped. Front rubbers are 195/65R15's and on back filling those curvaceous fenders are massive 390/45R15's.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we can almost breathe in the saddle colored Ferrari leather covering all the surfaces. A sexy molded intricate armrest is within the field of stitched leather. Inside we can slip into a long low back leather bench also in Ferrari saddle coloring. The clean and custom designed dash is also in red and is peppered with a lineup of round black bezel white faced AutoMeter gauges. A few toggles and billet machined pulls are available for various functions and are well within reach of the driver, just below the gauges and aimed at the driver. To the driver's right is a large tachometer mounted to the dash top. We can see Vintage Air and an AM/FM/CD player neatly mounted in a custom fabricated leather covered lower panel which is now below the dash. Wonderful wool tan carpeting with brown edging covers the floors and is immaculately installed. A Billet Specialties rally steering wheel with a leather rim is fronting this all custom dash. Above is a custom embossed Ferrari leather headliner that shows just beautifully. Noted behind the seats is a boxy trunk which has also been completely covered in the leather, and has a big subwoofer within.

Drivetrain
Here's the money shot, with all chromed and polished add ons to the big 520ci Donovan V8 mill. Inside are JE pistons, an LSM custom camshaft and Jesel lifters. Big Chief Aluminum heads are on along with the dual 4 barrel Holley carbs and for some extra goosing, a Weiand 8-71 Supercharger. All this sits on a custom sheet metal intake and it looks like a tall chromed office tower in this engine bay. Throwing power rearward through a 3 speed TH400 automatic. A Ford 9 inch rear with 3.73 gears makes the rear wheels spin. All looking fab under the hood, and all mechanically very sound. Custom hinges allow the hood to gracefully close over the protruding scoop. Headers evacuate the spent gasses nearly as quickly as they went in as their pre burned state.

Undercarriage
An award-winning car as such and one would expect to see nothing but nice underneath, and you will not be disappointed. In addition to the black painted floor pans and shiny stainless-steel exhaust, all else is painted in perfect red. Note Mustang II supplies the front suspension, and a 4 link with coil overs is on back. Power disc braking is on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability
Just a beauty to look at and also to drive but careful attention needs to be paid in respect for the massive amount of horsepower this car produces. Just a beauty of a driver and the digital analog looking dash is a highlight. Runs beautifully and stops on a dime.

Mostly a shower but with performance on demand if you want it, in spades! A wonderful custom build and I'd have to say worth every penny. It's been in the hands of NHRA Champ Bob Phelps and was even at one time in its early life, a former race car. So, feast your eyes on a truly solid steel Hot Rod build and you will quickly dispose of all these wannabes that were slapped together ages ago and look the part. This is a serious Hot Rod that quickly separates the men from the boys.
