2005 Ford Thunderbird Roadster

2005 Ford Thunderbird Roadster

Such was the strength of the Thunderbird name, or, as marketers call it, “brand equity,” that it could evolve or morph into different cars over the decades and still find success. The Thunderbird became many different cars, each with its own story, its own level of success and its own fans. With that kind of history, it's legitimate to ask, “What makes a Thunderbird, a Thunderbird?” How you answer that depends on what your favorite Thunderbird is.

For consignment, a last generation “Bird” that borrowed its design cues from the classics and put it into a current day format and style. By the numbers there were 9,525 made in 2005, 1,846 were Torch Red. This car has 63,294 miles clocked and is a convertible!

With the retro-esque exterior, round headlights and taillights, and smiling toothy egg crate grille it shows much like an aerodynamic version of the “square” birds of the late '50's. This convertible is bathed in a respray of Torch Red with a black canvas top and has a glass rear window. An aero hood scoop is noted, and a brite work spear, near the back of the front quarters, is emblazoned with 50th anniversary edition, although this writer assumes the first bird came out in 1954? Another retro throwback is the round taillights although these are more European in appearance as opposed to the thruster tail lamp of the early birds. Black 5 spoke wheels with T bird center badges are on all 4 corners.

Rounded surfaces, leather seats that sport black wide bolsters with extra side supports and red tuck and roll inserts are back to the two-seater of yore. Racing up through the buckets to the dash is a red vinyl sided and black topped console with a padded storage area top which doubles as an armrest. Cupholders are lined in stainless, and a red topped shifter is housed here as well. The dash in black and satin aluminum, white gauges, and a red and black leather wrapped steering wheel make up the very clean interior. Lower parts of the dash including the passenger glove box are also Torch Red. Black carpeted floor mats cover the floors and full black carpeting below can be seen. Conveniences such as seat heaters, a 6-disc CD player/AM/FM radio, and premium sound system, climate control, automatic top, power locks and windows, and power steering/brakes are installed. The door panels utilize the black red and satin aluminum as well and house power windows, mirrors and locks. Behind the buckets is a small extra storage area when the top is up, and a black tonneau covering hides the convertible when its down.

A clean, and well maintained 3.9 Liter DOHC fuel injected V8 with a 5-speed automatic transmission in back, sits within a clean engine bay. Note is a select shift “tiptronic” mode if you desire to be a little sporty! Spinning the tires is a 3.58 conventional rear axle.

Showing some factory overspray on the tire tub underside and the rest is painted Torch Red. A black X frame adds additional support for the car as it is a convertible. Heat shields are around the drive shaft and slight surface rust is noted in cast steel parts. All independent suspension, and all power drum brakes for this bird.

She fired right up, and ran flew down the test track like a hawk looking for a field mouse. Great handling, solid braking, and the top worked like a charm, but we kept it down. Noted new tires and a new respray for the appearance to shine on for the next lucky owner.

Certainly not a rare bird, but with its styling borrowed from an earlier age, it will have its fans who want the look without all the wrenching. Turn the key and go, or should I say fly down the highway!
