This model truck series began in 1938 using components similar in appearance to its passenger cars such as the hood, grill and windshield styling. The spare tire was placed on the right-hand side between the cab and the rear fender. Many people believe the 1940 Ford Pickup truck is one of the best-looking pickups ever made. It featured passenger car front end styling, fender-integrated headlights with egg-shaped rims and a vertical-bars grille.
For consignment, a 1940 Ford Pickup truck that is not your typical '40 Ford. Let's do a little exchange where we take the original worker truck and turn into a showstopper! This rad rod truck now has a Corvette 350ci V8, disc brakes in front, a beautiful bed and interior. A show condition, and who can resist those beautiful lines?
The 1940 sheet metal was worked straight and shaved of a few items, like the bumpers and badges, along with a chopped roof. Up front, the grille has been painted in body matching hot rod red, and it is RED in capital letters! A note to the lower line on the front of the truck, as it's like a reclining nude, curvaceous, appealing and wildly attractive. A tall rounded hood is masterfully fitted into the body which is all worked steel so gaps are well minded and panels are all laser straight. Looking much like they were shaped on an English wheel; the gracefully undulating fenders roll up and down in their rounded form and are attached by a running board which extends to the bed forming a “step side” just prior to the curved rear now fiberglass fenders. Around back, the bed tailgate has been simplified, the rear bumper shaved, and a quad of round chromed bezeled pointed tail lighting is now within the flattened rear roll pan. The bed is all flat straight steel and also painted hot rod RED! Note the gas filler is near the back of this smooth bed. 15-inch Torque Thrust highly polished 5 spoke wheels are now on all 4 corners.
Taking things to the next level: a swing of the doors at first is just painted metal with shiny handles and cranks. But a peek inside and we see a custom bench seat presenting itself in brown and tan ultra leather. The inserts are tucked and rolled, and the bolsters are smooth as silk. The consigner states that there is enough material to go hog wild on the doors if you'd like to step it up even further, it's up to you. In front a metal dash painted in hot rod RED has been simplified to a single metal panel and has black faced black bezel Stewart Warner gauges all lined up showing engine vitals for the driver. Fronting the dash is a more modern chrome 4 spoke black leather wrapped rally wheel on a tilt column. Nice clean dark tan square weave carpeting floods the floors and in the center rising toward the driver is a black metal painted 8 ball topped shifter. The headliner and side cab panels are covered in ultra leather and it is nice and tight. Consigner says he has enough carpeting to do the bed if you'd like.
A swing of that tall sculpted hood gives us full access for any potential wrenching we may want to do. You'll be doing it on a beautiful looking 350ci V8 courtesy a Corvette. It's topped with a 4-barrel Holley carb, and the intake has been cleaned to perfection, probably to team up with the cast ribbed valve coverings, and chromed air cleaner covering on top. On back is a Muncie wide ratio 4 speed manual tranny terming up with a 10-bolt Chevelle 3.08 rear. A nice complement of a HOT engine to go with that RED paint!
Utilizing a rear frame from a Chevelle with a 4 link suspension on a coil sprung axle gives the back of the truck stability and a smooth ride. Upfront a Mustang II front suspension with tubular control arms and shock absorbers. All totally rust-free Turbo muffler attached shiny exhaust system snakes its way to the rear exit. Disc brakes are now upfront, and on back drums.
Turn the key and put a smile on your face. It is that easy to start and drive! The test track just loved this truck as did the truck the test track! Powerful smooth acceleration, easy manual shifting through that Muncie and braking was solid. Despite no power steering the Mustang II rack and pinion was effortless even in a tight spot. All functions were up to snuff on this truck.
A runner and a stunner, this beautiful, modified example of the 1940 Ford Pickup is a turnkey truck. Clear the mantle as there will be trophies to put there as you travel around in this reliable RED radical rod.
