1948 Ford Super Deluxe

1948 Ford Super Deluxe

Excerpt from the Foreword section of original owner's manual… “The fact that you are the owner of a new Ford car is, in itself, an indication that you have a keen appreciation of a well-designed, carefully manufactured automobile. It has been designed to perform faithfully for many thousands of miles, and Ford Motor Company has the utmost confidence that this car will fulfill your expectations.” I think this wraps it up nicely!

This post war newly designed Super Deluxe which has gone through the restoration mill and been modernized and rodded with a tasteful touch. Now presenting an award winning head turner with a 350ci V8, nice paint, and a Ford body on a Chevy chassis and a post war presenting car, right here in the hallowed halls of Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
Wide horizontal ribbed front grille, rounded fenders. and no running board design are just a few of the traits that post war production brought in. Our example is bathed in eye popping red, has well minded gaps, no rust and a chrome trimmed split front windscreen. Snappy lines and curves were coming of age and this car is the definition of this design trend of the late 40's. A very light amount of chrome trimmings which would be the new post war norm is seen in abundance (or lack thereof!). However, this car has chrome appearing in various areas like the rocker trim, door handles and exhaust tips. The line of the back of this car is nothing short of spectacular with its long sloping trundled and rear glass on either side for the rear passengers emulating the line of the C pillar. It just has the 1940s look that has become very desirable and even hints at aerodynamic thought, although it was not a concern in 1948. All finishes are excellent and straw colored wheels wrapped in wide whites and covered in the middle with the dog dish moons and trim rings all chromed and we can now say suck it up buttercup!

Interior
With a swing of the doors we can see efforts were made to add some spice to this interior. Tan tweed burlap style broadcloth and brown molded vinyl pull and armrest with some curved brown piping to add interest, house the shiny handles and levers. Inside we see like new late model chairs in split bench with armrest for the front, and a solid bench on the rear form. More canvas broadcloth in tan and some brown piping to separate the inserts from the bolsters is seen in all clean form. All this floating in a sea of warm gold carpeting. The original chromed art deco inspired dash in red painted metal and lots of chrome trimming is fronted by a wood rimmed rally style steering wheel with a tilting column. Nice presentation for this dash which retains its originality but has modern Dakota speedo and clock within the original bezels. An AM/FM/CD player is in the center and hanging below is the sliders for the Vintage Air. A tan tweed burlap broadcloth headliner is above and is nice with no stains and is nice and tight. A shout out to the trunk which has also been restored with nice all carpeting coverings and a like new spare tire and wheel covering.

Drivetrain
Under the long shapely hood within the fully restored engine bay in blazing red is a like new 350ci V8 engine complete with a Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carb. On the back is a TH350 3-speed automatic and a 10-bolt rear axle. All is looking good and very machine age metal and chrome trimmings.

Undercarriage
As stated this car sits on a Chevrolet chassis and is all solid and rust free. Near perfect floor pans and rockers are here too. We note some new components for the fuel delivery to the engine, and a Flowmaster exhaust. Transverse leaf springs and independent coil springs for the suspension are on , and power disc brakes are up front and power drums for the back.

Drive-Ability
Just a solid car and looking great as we were off for the test drive. This car started right up and ran smoothly, great acceleration from the 350 cubes and good cornering. Braking is on a dime status and all functions were working swimmingly.

A head turner, nice finish, and good job on the restoration of this vehicle. A post war car from 1948 you will have limited chromed trimmings, an original dash peppered with new amenities, and new tweed seating which is nice and tight. A classy skate to pull up to drive in night at Sonic. You are definitely not “Disppppppickable!”
