1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe

1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe

“The Crown of Beauty Belongs to Chevrolet with New Royal Clipper Styling. Chevrolet's First again! Eye it . . . Try it . . . Buy it!”. Almost makes me want to rush to the showroom and buy it, which indeed many actually did. Along came hot rodding and one of their favorite cars to wrench on is the Special Deluxe.

With this consignment wrenching is an understatement. More like a total transformation and now we give you a fully custom rod version of the 1940 Chevy Special Deluxe. It is as fresh as a newly tapped root beer float and runs like a Swiss watch. Beautiful curves throughout, trimmed by beautiful chrome. How can you go wrong?

Exterior
Finished in Rosewood pearl (root beer brown), this 1940 Chevy Master Deluxe shines from head to toe. Superbly polished brite work adds a taste of modernization while retaining the original classic line. Clean metal painted black running boards span between modestly shaped fenders, which over time later models will do away with. Paint is nice and shiny and is overall very nicely preserved. A wonderful grandfather's mustache shaped grille undulates with the hood and fenders and on top of each front fender is a bullet cased headlight. The curved trunk lid has been shaved of all the badging, giving it a slick aero look. The rear bumper has been polished and a 3-inch chrome tipped dual exhaust can be seen peeking out below. 14-inch polished billet style with faux knock off hub wheels are in front and larger 15 inches are on the rear.

Interior
Black small vertical tuck and roll ribbed vinyl which have shiny cranks and a shiny handle for the actuator are covering the interior of the door panels. Slipping inside, we find ourselves on 2 tuck and roll stitched black late model bucket seats with high headrests. A wide matching bench stretches across the back and there is a black vinyl pillow in the center of this bench. The original dash has been removed and now we see a more modern styled black painted metal topped dash front dash with a custom brushed aluminum instrument cluster backing. This houses a lineup of round white faced vintage VDO gauges with shiny bezels. In the dash center now a Pioneer AM/FM/CD radio is installed and in front of the passenger is the original art deco styled glovebox with chromed vertical ribbing and a nice square clock. All vertical surfaces and headliner are covered in smooth gray vinyl, which is very clean, and tight. Gray wool carpeting floods the floors and is nice and clean protected by plastic mats. Noted is a B&M Star Shifter in the middle of the buckets.

Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 very clean and spit shined with smatterings of chromed covers and heat shields is shoehorned into a clean black and mirrored engine bay. This mill has a Lunati cam with a 480 lift and has been bored out .060. Atop is an Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. A TCI TH350 transmission which is a 3-speed automatic is attached, and it has a TCI breakaway converter. A 10-bolt rear is on the back. Looking good under this hood.

Undercarriage
A lot of patina and slight rust showing through at a few seams but body hangers and rockers as well as floor pans are solid and are original to this car. Independent coil springs for the front suspension and leaf springs for the back are seen along with power disc brakes now on front and power drums for the rear. Glasspack style mufflers are also installed.

Drive-Ability
Upon the fire up we were met with a nice throaty sound. Popping it into gear is effortless and we were off to the test track. This car has good acceleration, a nice ride, good brakes, and superior handling. All functions were working well during our test drive.

Overall a very nice rodded bowtie Special Deluxe, now even more special and more deluxe than ever. Plenty of work to modernize the looks and the mechanical innards, and you can have a turn-key showstopper whether it be up main street or at an actual show.
