1964 Chevrolet Impala SS

1964 Chevrolet Impala SS

The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being one of the most important American cars to date. These were the game changing years in which the Super Sport and the world famous 409 engines were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in formulating what we now know as the original muscle cars.

Here in the corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of cars with all kinds of purposes. Some classics to be shown, others to be driven, and others to do both. Here we have a classic that exemplifies early muscle cars. It is to be driven and should be shown. Read on!

Exterior
From its chromed bezel dual headlight flanking an egg crate grille, and lower wrap around bumper, to the white painted spear running along the crease at its belt line, and the dual sets of three taillights within more aluminum trim, and a white surround, and lower bumper, this car sports plenty of nice brite-work, and chrome to feast your eyes on. Wrap around chrome window surrounds, and cursive “Impala SS” badging with the galloping impala in a circle, and the crossed flags badge on both front quarter panels shines brightly against its maroon paint. This paint is beautifully applied and has very little within it to criticize. A silver painted roof top is a nicely contrasting color to the maroon. All lines and gaps on this car are laser straight, and it could have been just driven off the showroom floor back in 1964 this restoration is that good! Polished Chevy rally wheels with trim rings are wrapped with thin white wall sided tires.

Interior
As we swing open the 1 of 2 doors on this coupe, we are met with black vinyl that is tucked and rolled on the uppers, and has a smooth black vinyl center, then carpeting below. A Y pattern is created with the chrome delineating trimmings that thins in the center for the armrest. Just perfectly content here. As we move inside 2 nicely restored wide buckets also in black vinyl framed in chrome, flank a center console that is very thin and shoehorned between the buckets, and reach no further than the seats backs. The top of the console is covered with a houndstooth machined aluminum pattern and houses the T style automatic shifter. As the console narrows when it gets under the dash, it ducks down for an aftermarket trio of gauges mounted below the dash. A near perfect dash with original gauges in a multi-level design house the GM instruments. Another machined houndstooth pattern aluminum strip rust across the bottom of the dash and fronting all this an original steering wheel in very good condition. The steering column now has a side mounted tachometer. Last but not least a clean black square patterned tight headliner is above and black carpeting is covering the floors. More showroom quality restoration here.

Drivetrain
A non-original to this car a 283ci V8, (bored .030 over), painted the GM orange/red block and plenty of polished add ons sits in a fully restored and detailed engine bay. A single 4-barrel Edelbrock carb and Edelbrock intake manifold, are topped with a circular chromed air cleaner covering. This engine presents beautifully, and even the master cylinder is polished. Powerglide provides the 2-speed automatic transmission and the final drive is 3.36. Blue ribbon also under this hood.

Undercarriage
Power disc brakes are noted now in front and power drums for the rear. This all sits within a totally rust-free structure, of black steel. Rockers are solid and laser straight with a like now undercoating throughout. Floor Pans and toe kicks are all excellent. All sound independent coil springs are upfront and a 4 link with coil springs is now on back. A Quietflow shiny rust-free exhaust snakes its way past the framing and other mechanicals.

Drive-Ability
A pleasure to get in and turn the key and now hear some quiet but throaty exhaust. This is a classy classic, that drives like a dream, with no observed faults or non-working functions.

Plenty of WOW factor with this full restored, meticulous attention to every detail automobile finery. I have not seen a nicer example come through these doors and definitely a show winner. No rodding, no huge horsepower soup ups, just a clean original looking car right off the floor, and now in our hallowed halls.
