1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS

1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS

The Malibu made its debut in 1964, hitting the market as a trim-level version of the Chevrolet Chevelle. The car could be purchased in a variety of different body styles including a sedan, convertible, station wagon, or Sport Coupe hardtop. Featuring a luxurious interior highlighted by vinyl upholstery and an innovative steering wheel and the choice of either a six-cylinder or V8 engine which could deliver up to 300 horsepower by 1964, the Malibu quickly became one of Chevy's most popular nameplates.

For consignment, a 1967 Version of the Malibu trimmed SS Chevelle. This spicy speedster is the recipient of a new factory matching color paint job just last year, and a 12K engine rebuild and upgrade. Also, a new white interior was put in and customized due to a backorder of materials to match the original interior. These 1967 examples are this writer's favorite mainly due to the thinner body styling, and this one has suspension “jacked” up just a bit to be able to pound the ground a bit harder. Look out!

Exterior
This Malibu remains straight with shiny paint and just a few areas of small bubbling of said paint mostly near and around the drip edges which are in chrome on this car and the color is Deepwater Blue throughout. The gaps are just slightly off particularly on the hood section and driver's door as well as the lining up of the rear trimmings next to the tail lights. Dual headlights upfront, and wrap around the rear mid quarter taillights help “modernize” the design from the previous years. On the hood are dual bump ups with chromed venting on either side of the bump ups. The roofline of the B pillars has expanded the flying buttresses as they widen moving to the trunk lid. Some underlying rust can be seen at the seams of the buttresses as they greet the trunk deck. 15 inch bowtie rally wheels are on all 4 corners and in front are wrapped by 215/70SR15's and in back bigger 255/60R15's of BFG Radial T/A origin.

Interior
Newly installed white vinyl straight and true and clean as a whistle on the door panels, front smooth buckets, and rear large and in charge bench. No stains, tears or signs of wear on all these surfaces. White piping horizontal stitching, like new adjusters and back releases for access to the rear bench are seen. In the middle of the buckets is a black plastic console with a Hurst shifter and clock which is in the very front of this console. Just above is a trio of aftermarket gauges in a polished panel hanging from the dash, and on the column is an aftermarket tachometer. Up front the steering wheel has been wrapped in aftermarket vented leatherette, a factory AM radio, and AC eyeball vents throughout. The car was born with A/C, but currently has no compressor, only the HVAC controller and dash vents. The original dash is also in very nice condition sporting sections of black painted metal, horizontal thin banded aluminum panels in the center and another black band with a padded dash top. The headliner is wrinkled and sagging and carpeting below in black is good. I'd have to say the original blue interior replaced by the white is a real plus, it's beautiful. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that the material the consignor wanted did not come in!

Drivetrain
Under the nicely insulated and clean hood in a restored engine bay is a consignor stated professionally built 454ci V8 bored to 468ci The block is stamped T0627PLC (Tonawanda June 27th, 1988, 454ci V8). Our consignor states that the block is a 4 bolt main with aluminum cylinder heads, and Winters intake manifold both of which being of the LS7 variety and a Lunati hydraulic roller camshaft has been installed. There is a single 4-barrel Holley carb feeding the fossils and fresh air. All of which work together to make a consignor stated 600hp. On the back is a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. Bringing up the tail is is a rear axle is stamped CF 0317-12 which is a 12-bolt 3.31 PosiTraction but our consignor states now contains a 4.10 Positraction gearset.

Undercarriage
Well preserved, all steel with some previously welded in repairs on the rocker areas and some panels now newly welded in on the floor pans. All the rest is nice back and with the repairs the car is structurally sound. Independent coil spring suspension in front, and a 4 link system with coil springs on the rear. Drum brakes are all around and a nicely preserved exhaust snakes its way to midway where glass pack style mufflers release the gases mid car and sound off…1…2… 1…2…3…4!

Drive-Ability
With a quick start, smooth idle, and nice flow to the shifting of the Hurst actuated manual transmission. A great cruising car which felt like I was literally in a new car. I cannot say enough about the white interior; it's great and comfy. A few frowns on the functionality front with the radio inoperable, the wipers not wiping, and the heater blower is inoperable.

A head turner with the Deepwater Blue and white interior, looking like a very stock and very nice. A few faults in the paint, and a robust engine giving you the 1967 Chevelle Malibu SS and smoking the rear rubbers on the way to doing so!
