1948 Willys CJ2A

1948 Willys CJ2A

As the sound of incoming helicopters vibrates through the smoky air, a gaggle of army personnel and doctors' rushes to do triage on incoming wounded from the battle field. Some run, some ride in Jeeps with primitive gurneys on them, all having the goal of saving a young soldier's life. War is senseless, war is hell, why can't we all just get along and realize we are all different but inherently good?

Good Morning Vietnam! For consignment the look of the battlefield with this 1948 Willys CJ2A is a civilian version of the Jeeps that we're used on the battlefield. It has the battlefield swagger and is beautifully restored thanks to a frame off effort by the consignor. Now with a full olive drab canvas top and sides, all bathed in black. It sports the extra options of a back seat, a passenger's bucket, side steps, dual rear taillights and a strap on gas can in full metal jacket. A very nice example. Bang! Bang!

Exterior
The beneficiary of a frame off restoration, all panels are straight, rust free, and bathed in black. There are some areas of heavier overspray, but the paint is overall good. Throughout the Willys badge shows up having been embossed into the steel and now painted red. A simple steel bar bumper frames the lower part of the iconic vertical ribbed grille with a single round headlight on either corner. Squared off fenders are on the front and a no door policy is the norm for this early version of the truck. Optioned step ups are below the driver and passenger opening, and on the back are dual taillights. Also, a gas tank is strapped to the back and a spare tire to the passenger's side. All wheels are 16-inch steel wheels and are painted red, all wrapped in deep tread thin all terrain tires, this includes the spare. Also optioned on is a complete canvas top and canvas door covering for the passengers. This shows in olive drab and has clear plastic windows throughout with no tears are even areas of excessive wear. On the back we note in lieu of the bumper is a tow bar for a ball and a U hitch is just above. Ten Hut!

Interior
Utilitarian but noble looking all bathed in black for the painted steel dash and interior panels. Rubber covers the floors, and red vinyl buckets are nice and tight on tubular framing seat structures. There is a rear bench as well. The gauge cluster is a lineup of round black faced gauges with white lettering, and there is a heater installed. Inside under the canvas top of a fully framed tubular roll cage that helps support the top as well as safely protect passengers in the event of a rollover. The floors behind the buckets are ribbed steel uncovered, so if you take the rear seat out, you'll have a nice covered cargo area. Also of interest are brown suede boots for the parking brake and shift lever. A restored black original bakelite steering wheel is in front of the driver and looking good. Sir YES SIR!

Drivetrain
A swing upward of the hinged hood and it reveals the factory 134ci inline 4-cylinder fully rebuilt and restored. It now fires off of a 12-volt system, is fed by a 1-barrel carburetor, and in back is a 3-speed manual transmission. The axles work off of a hefty 5.38 gear, and hence giving us the high rev sound of one of these coming at you, sounding like it's in a perpetual first gear. Hit IT!!!

Undercarriage
All nicely restored and rust free, Shiny black paint abounds bling with the inside view of some red for those steel wheels. Leaf springs are the norm for the suspension, and in front are now disc brakes, and on back the drums remain. A like new exhaust snakes its way from the mill to a right rear exit. Very little road dirt is even seen underneath, along with lots of new parts all with no rust, and blue shocks to help the leaf springs.

Drive-Ability
My partner in crime grabbed our groover, and entrenching tool and we were off to the test track. After a quick fire up, it got out there in the wilds and performed beautifully. Smooth high rev acceleration, good handling and drive like a 1948 4 wheel drive truck.

A real time piece, fully restored and functional and a definitely an eye catcher that could take on many forms with the canvas on or off, rear seat and even passenger seat in or out, and 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive early version of the Jeep, in like new or even better then new condition with some upgrades.
