1964 Pontiac GTO Coupe

1964 Pontiac GTO Coupe

In early 1963 a team of engineers and designers got together at Pontiac and decided to focus more on street racing and power. The Tempest had been in production for a bit, and a more “muscular” powerful car was needed. Hence the acronym GTO or Grand Tempest Option became the code for the secret new development that would take place. John DeLorean actually claims the GTO came from the Italian Gran Turismo Omologato or Grand Touring Homologated (certified) which in reality the car was never meant for grand touring, but to be the fastest straight line Pontiac produced.

For consignment, a correct drivetrain muscle car with 78 X Y block with a 4bbl intake, horizontal dual front headlights, the unique Pontiac “beak” up front on the split grille and bathed in nicely applied and carefully finished Cameo White. Inside a factory ball topped shifter and a like new gleaming red interior. The car has PHS documentation for some added provenance. All finished off with Pontiac Rally II wheels… time to get your classic “Goat” groove on.

Exterior
Horizontally lined up on either side dual headlights, a split horizontal grille, a small “beak” in front, GTO badging, nice chrome bumper, dual scooped hood, straight steel side slabs all bathed in Cameo White paint best describes the beginnings of this car. Carrying on, nice trimmings for the glass and a pristine metal roofline. Side slabs are near perfect and sport well minded gaps. The GTO badge on the front quarters are a bit beat up but are correct. Bringing up the rear are the horizontal ribbed bezel taillights which butt up to the edges of the rear quarters. The trunk lid is covering a NYC 2 bedroom apartment sized trunk. Another pristine chromed bumper below, and on all 4 corners 14-inch Pontiac Rally 2 wheels with deep dish trim wrapped in raised white letter Wide One tires. Overall slight scratches and the usual wear for the paint, but it remains beautiful, and presenting very nicely for this intro year car.

Interior
Inside deep red Strato bucket seats in stunning red vinyl are installed. These have tuck and roll inserts and smooth outside bolsters delineated with red piping. Some chromed side trimmings for the hinges are seen. These front chairs cozy up to factory design red vinyl with a litany of different shaped horizontal rectangles with some chrome trimmings and knobs. The rear bench stretches across the back of the car and offers up plenty of pristine seating for 3 adults. A short stick factory white ball topped shifter reaches for the driver's hand and sits within the center hump and is within a nice 60's design center console, complete with a glovebox at the rear. The dash front is using a machine swirl pattern aluminum background and has a trio of round gauges, all in front of an original steering wheel. Below is a horizontal ribbed panel that houses all the pulls and knobs as well as an ashtray and the radio. Red carpeting is the floor covering and is very clean as it is under a yellowed plastic floor mat system.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a fully restored and correct, painted in a beautiful metallic turquoise engine block showing up at 389 cubes, and is a 78 X Y stamping 1964 stamping. It is rated at 325hp and on top is a 4-barrel setup for the feeding of fossils and air. A Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission is now on back, with a 10-bolt rear with 3.23 Safe-T-Track gear configuration. Chromed valve covers, the now chromed 1 snout round air cleaner is atop, and deep shiny black supple wiring is fab for the engine.

Undercarriage
No surface rust on suspension parts or floor pans. Very structurally sound with no invasive rust, solid framing, good rockers patina showing on the floor pans as well as a trunk pan and fuel tank. Independent coil springs for the front with power drum brakes, and 4 link with coil springs for the rear with power drums are on this car. The mid-section of the exhaust piping is heavily rusted but shows no leaks.

Drive-Ability
A wonderful experience as described by our decoder and test driver. She handles great, accelerates like a 325hp car should, and has relatively strong bias free brakes on the panic stop. Having power steering and the interior is fully functional, and all buttoned up the seating and surfaces. Plenty of get up and go so I got up and went.

All is looking just fine for the exterior, interior, and drivetrain which is very original and correct under that long hood. A great design year as Pontiac this car celebrates the coming out party on the muscle car front. All boxes are checked in this classic, just turn the key and point the beak nose front end towards home.
